After releasing an alpha version 6 weeks ago, Olivier Hustin started working on version 0.8 of his versatile smooth-scrolling platform game engine called Vscreen. This version has just been released and you can download it right here. In this release the following things were changed or added:

  • Added enemy type 2. They stop and turn back when they hit a wall, stop or jump down when they reach a cliff. You can optionally make them 'bounce'
  • Added enemy type 3. They stop and turn back when they hit a wall or reach a cliff
  • .lev files can now be loaded in the VScreen Editor. Less paramaters are hard-coded now, so it has become a lot easier to create your own levels
  • Added the possibility to dynamically set level Width and Height (read from .lev file)
  • Animated lethal patterns (flames)
  • Possibility to go up / down ladders
  • Major code update: Optimization / memory map / Loading system
  • Fixed bug in moving platforms.
  • Parameters such as speed/gravity/inertia loaded as parameters (.lev)
  • Bridges working both ways
  • Keyboard remap. Space=Jump/Up = Up Ladder/Down = down ladder
  • Removed the rebound effect when holding the “jump” button down

If you have not tried Vscreen yet we recommend you to do so now. Although Vscreen is intended to allow people to develop their own platform games, a set of demonstration levels well worth having a look at is included. More information on Vscreen and the Vscreen level editor can be obtained from Olivier Hustin's website. If you have bug-reports or suggestions for new or improved features you can suggest them in this forum thread. Being downloaded more than 1000 times already, Vscreen is one of the most popular software titles in our freeware downloads section.

Really cool improvements. Works quite well on a real turbo R too. It works like it should.

Did u try to break some blocks ? There are stars behind some blocks.

The flying thingy you just have to jump on it, it's a moving platform.

It's hard to get to the breakable blocks near the exit, even with the jump pad.

After verification you're right, I changed the character speed in that level and the last platform is unreachable.

I just fixed the map, if you download the new archive on my page it will work.
Can anyone replace the copy in the download DB ?

thx

Go under them, jump and break with the head (only works for some blocks like the two on which you start at the beginning of the level)

The updated Vscreen is now also hosted on the MRC.
