I've been a user of fMSX since version 1.5 and I learnt about coding emulators in your page at komkom.org. fMSX is still the only chance for emulating MSX in low-CPU powered devices.

I believe I started with 0.8 if I'm not mistaken. there was no disk support at that time, we had only support for roms. I remember I wrote a small PC util that removed the loader from my games in order to extract the rom to use with FMSX. These were (still) the good times. Smile

@Mafcase: if it allows custom installs, I'm sure it's easier to find the market APK.

as for FMSX: very first impression: sound's a bit crackling (on any setting), and the controls are not very intuitive (there's this "grid", but it does not react to what I do?), but otherwise the emulation is good, and it's fast.
tested with HTC Desire HD, using Android Gingerbread, stock rom.
Also, the onscreen keyboard works, but it's very small and off-centered. You'd need a resistant screen with stylus to control it properly.

sorry because I intend to give my opinion but I make a mistake the way I tell it.

Accept my apologies @FMS and all the people that are thingking about me because I said that in this way.

I do not like fMSX emulator, since years, but I can say in a more respect manner.

Sometimes I let my feelings talk, that is a mistake.

Pitpan, I apologice.

finally a decent msx emulator on Android! Sadly I own a Motoral Milestone with 2.2 firmware. I hope you will be able to port this emulator to 2.2, the Milestone will get no official update to 2.3 :-(

@fms: Hi Marat, good to see that you're still into MSX. You could include C-BIOS with fMSX: it can run most game ROMs and it's BSD-licensed. Maybe you could even ask some of the msxdev competitors if you can include their games, then users would have something to play immediately after downloading fMSX.

@pitpan: Today's phones are not low on CPU power anymore. For example the N900 runs openMSX just fine and it's not the fastest phone around. fMSX is easier to port though because it is a smaller code base and has less dependencies.

As the current fMSX-Android is basically a beta, I am still working on some features, like the sound. The controls should work just fine for you though. There is a directional pad on the left (the nine squares) and two fire buttons on the right (which work as a single fire button in fMSX). I tried to avoid showing too many overlays, toshow as much MSX screen as possible.

Also, the onscreen keyboard works, but it's very small and off-centered. You'd need a resistant screen with stylus to control it properly.
Can I have a screenshot? =) Also, are you testing it in the horizontal or vertical position?

I am currently looking at the Android NDK for 2.2 (aka android-8 API). Unfortunately, it is really basic, so there is a lot of things I will have to implement in both C and Java before fMSX can run on Android 2.2. There is no native audio API, no native input API, and I am not even sure about the video. Still, give it a few weeks and I may be able to do something about the 2.2 Smile

Android SDK does allow to include data files into a package, but does not let you access them via stdio API. So, not until I fake the stdio API.
