For people who still have Android 2.2 (Froyo) devices, I have published the beta version of fMSX for these devices:

http://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.fmsx.froyo

while the Gingerbread version is now out of beta:

Please, test the fMSX-Froyo beta and report your findings here.

fms: was it a lot of work to port it?

In any case, it seems you did it quite quickly!

Manuel: It was a lot of really messy and inefficient JNI interfacing. I am afraid, all this comes at the cost performance too. But, what the hell, it runs under Froyo!

Folks, if you are running fMSX on Android and like it, please, make sure you vote for it via above URLs. It is a free application, so the least you can do is show your approval by voting. Thanks!

I have just removed fMSX-Froyo, switching the proper fMSX to the Froyo-compatible version. So, from now on, just download from

http://market.android.com/details?id=com.fms.fmsx

It should be compatible with any Android device that has Froyo or newer OS. Also added support for Xperia Play buttons.

It crashes here on my Android 2.2 Sad
I created a folder "rom" on my SD card, MSX roms on it - select any rom, it crashes.
Am I missing something?

You are missing reading instructions, which tell you to put the MSX ROMs onto "/sdcard", not into "/sdcard/rom".

-SCC sound volume seems low (at least, compared to the real MSX model I know). It'd be nice if it were adjustable as well (since it really differs per MSX model).
It definitely sounded all right in that YouTube video of yours. Anyway, you can control it with the overall Android volume control, I think.

The Android volume control changes the overall volume... I mean the difference between the volume of the PSG and SCC chip.

It's not that it sounds broken (it's fine); It's just that the PSG seems loud compared to the SCC, if I base it on various real MSX systems I know.
There is probably no perfect setting for this, since various MSX computers have a different balance between the two, but based on how Konami recorded some of the tunes themselves (e.g. for soundtracks and the Metal Gear 2 remake on PS2) I'd say the level should be around that of a Philips VG8235 MSX2 (if you know one). OpenMSX's defaults seem to reflect this as well.

As it is now, Some "secondary voices" in SCC/PSG tunes sound louder than the primary ones; this is because in many of these tunes, Konami used one of the PSG channels as a sort of echo for one of the SCC channels.

Either way, I'm nitpicking here.... I just tend to pay a lot of attention to sound in emulators, especially MSX =)
