Allright. The first off-topic discussion. And a Hot one for sure. I see a lot of people shouting "OPEN SOURCE, OPEN SOURCE". And also" ASP SUCKS, PHP RULES". I for myself have professional experience in both (as in work). So, I kinda know the (dis)advantages of both worlds. But what I'd like to know is, why do you support open source if you do. And if you don't, why don't you?

Also if you reply with "Open source rules, Microsoft sucks". Then please give us some arguments and, better, the experience you have with both worlds.

I like both worlds. But also see the disadvantages of both worlds. Are you someone who's just shouting "Open Source" because you've got something against $$$ software companies or are you experienced?

Let me know! Blast me off my feet! Big smile

i have worked for past months in some company where i had to code some Extranet using PHP. When i came there i knew totally nothing about PHP but i learned the entire language within 2 weeks !!! My co-worker made the Intranet for the company using ASP.

I remember the wonderful help i received on the Interet when in search for PHP tutorials and stuff.. I bet there are enough oif those for ASP as well but PHP was overwhelming... and not Microsoft bound

need more?

I don't see what a specific programming/scripting language has got to do with Open Source or not. When MSX.ORG was in ASP there was plenty of information freely available on the web. I learned both languages (well, at least the basics & the things I need) in a very short timespan. Maybe we should start a separate PHP or ASP discussion Wink

About open source: I think it depends. Some projects work great as open source, some don't. Besides, when developing with a team, sources are 'open' within that team. There's not much difference there...

open source for everyone is cool.Linux is the perfect sample for everyone. check GNU.org for more..

How about being able to costumize your windows version? reprogramming C written components or whatever? As for myself, if i were able to (and had the time) i would love to rewrite certain parts of Windows... But it simply isnt possible. With linux (and similar) i can.

Especially, we all know the US is very paranoia and use internet spies, crawlers and more. With software, such as msn, we just don't know what happens with the data we transmit. With software like NeoTrace you can trace the connection and view the various routers that are used. I can see that many data passes the US and certain geographical locations have a high score for this. What does MSN do? Does it allow the transmitted data to be scanned by FBI/NSA software such as carnivore? We don't know for sure. But the point is: open software is not suitable for software programmers to include possibilities for FBI like companies to scan data.

just a reason to support open source

What you tell me here is: You worked with PHP, a co-worker with ASP. So without actually getting into ASP yourself, you still conclude that PHP is better for you??

when we had problems coding some stuff... we came to eachother to discuss the solutions whether it was PHP or ASP. Same shit, same problems!

Haha LOL Big smile Coding is indeed not about syntax... But we're getting off-topic. Back to the open-source discussion.

For example: have you ever released source to the big public? (I rule out the MSX scene, coz releasing in our scene is done very much Smile )

yes i have. There was i dude asking me to make a project that included an interface project and some kernel project with virii scanning functionallity!

I managed to create a kernel (and ofcourse the interface) that loaded 154 MB(!) files withing a couple of seconds using stoooooooopis visual basic (the lamest language ever)!

The scanning function was multi threaded and used hard-coded algo's to detect standard virus signatures and using a altered neural network and pattern recognition to detect unknown virii. It worked perfectly (Except for some flaws that did not detect some tpye of virii. Did not fixed that bug) but the actual scanning was far too slow unfortunatly.

The source has been spread throughout the internet. However, the latest update (that includes the scanning stuff) has been wiped out during some backup roll back. I have only the source that loads files, and the interface ofcourse!

Moral: VB sucks for performance! VB rules for RAD (Rapid Application Development)!

Though I like reading your comments and experiences so far Mark! Big smile

FWIW IMO off-topic talk should be done in an off-topic place, where it might be on-topic. IOW, I'm not a fan of the idea of an off-topic forum on MRC.
