Finally found the link on http://snesmusic.org/hoot/v2/... Too bad it's Windows only and the last version is from 4 years ago. Still, will give it a shot in my virtual machine.

First gotta reinstall all my music stuff before I can do anything with it tho, since I upgraded to a nice SSD...

Well so far - hate to say it - Goemon is not inspiring me at all Sad so instead I decided to take another Konami game and go all synth-oriental on that one. I might bug you for some tips of making oriental-sounding music Wolf...I'll see if I can post some updates here on a regular basis...and with more technological/composition background then just "this is how far I got".

Nothing so say just yet though, I have the original sequenced and I'm gonna slow it down and come up with a good intro...I have the oriental basic percussion riffs done Wink

Is it an oriental game, or just any Western game but with oriental sauce?

Yeah I know that video, very well done, but also completely not my style =) It's not really an oriental game, but I want to do the song a bit more in that style. I have the idea for the intro, but so far its pads and percussion so not yet really oriental sounding Smile

Allright, as promised a bit more content to this topic than just text...put my previous two projects in the fridge for now, although I am sure I will get back to them. Here is a WIP version of what I am working on now, again all soft synths, although I only used FM8 and various PLAY libs for this one. It is still very basic, not much in terms of arrangements, that usually gets added later....first I always just want to get a feel for the song and where I want to go with it.

Download WIP

Basically while listening to the original the instruments kinda came to me, the piano, violin and acoustic guitar just seemed appropriate choices. Getting the acoustic guitar sounding right is always a lot of work with velocity switches, anyone who has trouble getting it to sound right I would advice to take guitar lessons...take two of those and you'll know. Since I play this guitar 'plucked' there is no fret noise going on, I might add that later but I really only like to do that when playing rapid chords. Here is a short excerpt of just the guitar so you can listen to the variation in it.

Questions, remarks, suggestions all welcome!

I think that getting most stuff to sound right involves a lot of velocity switching Smile
For my Maze of Galious shrine song I used a preset of my Roland XV-5050 for the acoustic guitar and also had to work on the velocity switching there.

The violin is a Play sample, I presume? Does it sound like this out of the box? Or did you use keyswitches? I've always found the keyswitches of Play Ministry of Rock quite a pain to work with if you want a lead guitar to sound right.

Anyways, sounds good so far, even tho the drums could use some more variation. And I didn't hear any FM8 stuff, is that correct?

Actually the rhodes-type of subleads, and the lead at the end are FM8. I also have some bass strings in around the time the acoustic guitar starts playing but kind of forget to record those for the WIP :X The Violin is from Gypsy and so far is completely out-of-the-box...no keyswitches or anything...didn't even load keyswitches or anything (those are much heavier on my poor laptop). The Lead guitar in King Kong 2 is done with MoR btw and although not perfect I was quite happy with how it turned out with the keyswitches. Again, they are just something you have to invest time in to edit just right...still easier than buying an electric guitar and learning how to play it well Wink

Agreed on the drums part...I made the basic riffs and did play with some variation in the snares but there is still a lot of work to be done there.

Um... little bit off-topic, but talking about soft synths, for those who use VSTi, tomorrow Thuesay 21th you can get a free MiniMoog VST at Arturia's webpage. I guess you'll have to register or so. But if it's 100% free... I'll try to get it, tho I have a Slim Phatty...
