That "same look comparison" I thought like when first both chars get converted to screen 5 format
and then see whether they look same.
But, the 8 pattern bytes getting stuffed different colorbytes by collapsing,
for every pattern byte need to check whether it needs inversion.

I dont know about issues "things currently onscreen" versus "whole level".
Optimizing for "onscreen" might increase ROM space for "whole level".
With those flipped patterns, in another onscreen situation the unflipped version might be asked.

Maybe the collapse should be done as first preprocessing step in "whole level" view, then those issues not occur.
