So, has anyone played enough of Final Fantasy for MSX to see if there is some bugs still around like in NES version and how in general the game differs from that version? I've just started playing it and I have Monk (or Black Belt) on my party and it seems that the character is pretty much useless. I have read from the NES walkthrough that the Monk character class should gain unarmed fighting bonuses with his fists and bonus to his defense when not using armor, but for some reason that doesn't apply on MSX version. Am I doing something wrong since his skills won't increase, or is this some kind of bug?

And btw this is pretty darn good game! Smile

If you want to try this game, but are scared with the japanese, here's a good japanese to english script for all the messages, items, menus etc., that should really ease your experience: http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/522595-final-fantasy/faqs/49423
And this walkthrough is also very useful: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy

Ps. I wonder, why isn't this game translated to MSX even if all the texts already exists in other versions?

I keep hoping that it's this game that Max Iwamoto and friends will translate next! Smile

The script for Final Fantasy 1 on the MSX is an enhanced version of the NES script. It is more elaborate at places. And of course it has fm music, making it even more interesting.

Max said in the other thread that the translated game is some "little game" and not any time consuming multidisk one. FF indeed fits to one disk, but it is quite a big and long one after all (I don't know how they ever fitted that all into one disk?).

But of course it would be nice if the translated game indeed is FF - it certainly deserves to get a proper translation.

And something to add for the topic which I asked for: I found a site listing all the bugs in the different versions (MSX version was there also) and it seems that the Monk / Black Belt isn't indeed working like it should. There's also some other bugs present too: http://fforigins.awardspace.biz/ff1/bugs/index.html

We had a look at it some time ago and it's definitely a good candidate. But I am afraid it won't be the next game on our list. I would say next after next next Wink

While researching on how the game made inside I made a turbo mode for Panasonic Turbo-R. It's significantly increases speed of the game. It should help if somebody want to play it. You can download it here:

Apply patch on original Final Fantasy disk.

The game in question is a ROM based game.

Regarding FF, even it's only one disk, but game is longer than most of multi-disk games. I think it fitted in one disk, because they didn't use advanced graphic and most of it was converted from NES, so no huge space required to store big story driven visuals.

This might be a dumb question, but is it possible to apply this patch when I have concanated file with the FF original disk and the save disk? Is it possible to separate the concanated files and does the patch work with already used save disk, so I don't have to start over? Thanks in advance!

If the game disk first in the file, then yes, you can apply the patch. I only forgot to mention that you need to hold [SELECT] key while booting to activate turbo mode. And patch do not affect save disk.

I just tested the patch with real Turbo R GT. However, the FM music gets corrupted by it, so it's not really fun anymore playing it even if the scrolling is a lot smoother. Isn't the FM supposed to work or am I doing something wrong? If it's supposed to be like that, then I wonder how it differs from starting the game in turbo mode f. ex. in Runit from CF (which I have also tested and it also corrupts the music) or is this just an another way to apply the turbo mode?

You didn't do anything wrong. The game wasn't coded to properly support turbo mode. So it needs to be patched in order to play FM music properly with turbo enabled. I never played it with FM music, so I didn't experience the bug before Wink
