Now that Nextor supports disk emulation mode, I am opening this thread to keep track of the problems that will arise when trying to emulate some games. Please post here as much information as possible as this will help me to diagnose and fix the issues for next versions.

And let's start with...

* Fray (Turbo-R version)

It shows a very erratic behavior. Sometimes it won't even boot. Other times it seems to work, but it freezes as soon as the character starts moving. Yet sometimes works perfectly.

* SD Snatcher (project Melancholia)

Depending on your hardware configuration you may find that the game has no music, despite the sound cartridge being properly detected. In this case press SHIFT while booting to disable the internal floppy disk drive and free some memory.

* Moonlight Saga

Despite being usually found in a DSK file this is actually a game that requires DOS 2 (Nextor always boots in DOS 1 when in emulation mode). So just boot normally, mount the DSK in any drive using MAPDRV, and run its AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Hi Nestor,

About the Fray bug: the random nature of this one reminds me a lot the Snatcher translated bug when used on Nextor. This is caused by the fact that interrupts are not disabled by some Nestor DOS functions (I think it was function 1Ah - Set disk transfer address). This was happening on MSX-DOS 2 / file mode (no disk-emulation). I just added a "DI" instruction after some DOS calls and that fixed the bug.

I'm not sure what the standard says about interruption state when exiting DOS routines, but maybe it could be good to match the old DOS implementations, in both normal and disk-emulated routines ?

You say that Nextor always boots in DOS 1 when in emulation mode. Is that something that could be changed in a future version?

Not without a great amount of work. But why would you want that? All DOS 2-friendly software should work by booting normally (and if you have it in a disk image file, just mount it using MAPDRV).

Hi Konamiman,

Hopefully by compatibility list you meant for us to post games that we've tested working right? If that's the case then I'd like to confirm the following games working that I've tried so far with the ability to save back to the userdisk.

1. Xak 1
2. SD Snatcher (Project Melancholia)
3. Silviana
4. Super Cooks (with the Data Disk from Django's website) *Note, sometimes had to hold down SHIFT during boot to get it to load.
5. Golvellius 2 (Once you complete the town, first scrolling level, you can save)

Again, this for me is such a great gift to the MSX scene and I feel like I can finally play through so many disk games that I've been missing out on because I didn't want to spend the time writing them all to floppies and keeping up with userdisks... It's just so incredibly convenient.

I am more interested on information about games that do not work, so that I can do the appropriate adjustments in the Nextor code. But reports of working games are also welcome of course! Smile

Risk II Campaign Version hangs on playing in Campain Mode when change to next player.

Playing directly in disk that doesn't fail. Same problem with japanese and english version.

More information: it freezes too in multiplayer mode. Yo can play normally but when you pass your turn, the game freezes before next player can start his movements. The dsk image is correctly defragmented.

It is really a requirement defragmented DSK images? This tool can be used:

Another one:

  • Fray (MSX2). All intro-disk works fine. When you leave the first town and change disk to GAME-0 it loads for a second and then freeze, with black screen.

A note, a typical behavior for games not working is that holding SHIFT at boot the game not loads, it freezes after a second of disk access. With Risk II black screen, with Fray (MSX2) it freezes on the screen "CAPS => 50Hz".
Maybe it could help.
