Well done karloch, you will not regret it.
Several developers are starting to work with it (myself included).
I will show you some tests and snapshots (perhaps some video) in the next few days.
I am adapting my old "too slow msx2" engines to gfx9000 as we speak and I am also working on graphical improvements for GFX9000 users in the msx2 project I am working on for the last past weeks, with success, so as soon as I have something complete enough to show, I will.

I am looking for a way to convert high color depth graphics for several screen modes in order to gain color depth in the games without changing barely nothing in the code.
I had success with screen8 graphics and that is an improvement already, since those engines work now at 256 colors instead of 16, but I am aiming for 19000 or 32000.
This way, the same game can look at 16 or 256 colors on normal msx2, and 19k or 32k colors on gfx9000 with barely no changes in the code. This is the first and easiest way to give an improvement to gfx9000 users while mantaining retro-compatibility and avoiding fragmentation of the msx comunity.
I am advancing fast (I am using basic Smile ). I hope in 7 days I will be able to show something advanced enough.

ok, this is embarassing...
I am testing the powerbasic rom on openmsx but nothing happens.
I am guessing the rom must be enabled by writting some code or it has to be loaded in a specific way (I tested all the mappers on openmsx).
I am sorry I am so useless with hardware and ASM... (I just enjoy creating videogames, anything beyond this is just a headdick for me, I am completelly clueless)
Any help?

Type _V9990 after starting up in basic. Use an MSX2 with Video9000 extension (saves you from switching to GFX9000 video). You can use the mapper-type-guesser of openMSX (don't specify mapper type). But I heard from BiFi that this is an unreliable hack, which leads to an unstable system.

Thank you, Manuel Smile

I tested msx2 and TR-GT with video9000 and the powerbasic rom on cart a, with auto mapper enabled, but I get a "syntax error" when typing "_V9990" in basic.

What am I missing?
(I am useless...)

Nevermind! I just found it!
Auto mapper does not work, I used mapper (page012) and it works!
Thanks!

ok, I have been testing it for a while now and, indeed, it is unstable. It freezes the computer or reestarts it when using certain commands, or when putting certain coordinates to certain graphical instructions.
It does not seem to be useful at this stage.
What a pity...
Hopefully someone will pick up this exelent work (powerbasic for z80) and fix it?
I can only hope now...

@kai

If you are using Powerbasic from emulator, maybe you want to use this version: http://www.msx.ch/ftp/Products/Graphics9000/powbasic.lzh (don't really know if there's a newer version)

place this files in a folder, open the folder using "dir as disk" and fire up a Turbo R GT, it will boot and load V9990 support. I used it a lot and I could not make it crash, so I suppose it is stable, but I could not use the two layers from P1 mode at the same time properly (using PowerBASIC commands, that's why I decided to go low level programming, but I didn't had much time).

Thank you tvalencia, this is the version I am using now to do some tests, but this version is for turbo-r only and I am aiming to program for z80

Regarding the second layer from p1 mode, it is being successfully used in the powerbasic demo mentioned before. There are some parts of the demo which use the second layer on p1 mode with powerbasic.
It is a pity I cannot find the files of said demo, I have to check the code from the video itself Sad

Good news!
Tecnobytes just announced they are developing an accelerator card for any msx! We will have kits of turbo cpu for our msx + gfx9000 after all Smile
They also said this card will have some extra features which they do not want to reveal just yet.

And now the really good news:
They also just announced they are developing a new msx prototype, and it is just as I wanted it:
It will include V9958 + V9990 superimposed! + opl4 (moonsound) and some extra features they are not ready to reveal yet, but you can be absolutelly sure that one of those features will be the turbo z80 (their own accelerator kit integrated).
It looks like the next generation of msx is here!
