Agreed! The MSX evolved in another direction. Instead of focusing too much on squeezing the hardware and ending up with impressive-but-terribly-boring games like Agony, the MSX focused on art, music, playability and also good storylines. Other consoles/home computers of the era rarely had shooters that told you a compelling story about a director of the space science who tried a coup d'état, was exiled to planet Sard, escaped from there and tried his revenge.

And then you have to realise that about half of the details of the story for Gradius 2 are missing in the original translation by Konami... Imagine what the full story is for the Gradius saga.
