Hi everyone my name is ali6x944,
And I'm a noob when it comes to the world of MSX computers.
The sakhr AX-350II is my very first condition and it works, I would assume it is one of the easiest to hack, since all the main chips are accessible or at least this is what it looks like in the photos...
But I'm kinda stuck, I can't lift the cover off, there is no screws!!
I would like to open it as a good start to service it and to clean some of the keys, the seem to have weird brown stuff on them...
Thanks for all the help in advance Smile

Nice computer! I have the Yamaha CX5MII myself, a variant of the same computer.

Along the back side there are four slits facing downward with tabs inside. Use a flat screwdriver or dull knife to lift the tabs, and you should be able to open it. You may also have to remove the side slot module, not sure (it’s been a while since I opened my CX5MII), but this should get you started.

You don't have to remove side slot module to open the case though

The AX-350II has a floppy drive in place of the module slot and there is no slot for the mini ROM cartridge.

Thanks a lot for all support Smile
But quick question about the tabs, should I push them all dawn and simultaneously push the top of the case to open it?

Have a look at this service manual :
http://ftp.funet.fi/pub/msx/docs/service_manuals/yamahacx5msm.pdf

The page 11 explains how to open the Yamaha ax350II case. Follow the instructions. You need to use a flat tip screwdriver. Start from the corner tab. Don't excess the force. Try not to break it.

BTW your AX350II is like upgraded YIS805 architecture in a YIS503II plastic body.

I don’t exactly recall what I did last time I opened it… But I think you push the tabs down one by one, opening up the one corner first and then you can make your way to the other end. If one side is open you could keep the crack open by (gently) jamming a flat screwdriver between it, but I’m not sure if that was necessary to open this MSX.

And indeed there should be no need to force it, so take it slow and keep the body free from damage.

Finally opened!
I have noticed some interesting and peculiar things about the chips however, they have different dates of manufacturing; for example the Yamaha V9938 has a date code 8th week 1985 and a copyright date of 1984, while the Z80 has date code of 44th week 1987, the MB81464-12 has a date code of 38th week 1987, many 74xx series logic chips have what seems like dates ranging from 1972 and 1987...

I think I will start by increasing the RAM, by populating IC312, IC313, IC316, IC317 on the main board.

Also I'm curious to know the chip on this riser board, I googled the part number of XD025C0-052 and no immediate results, but I think it is a costume mask ROM requested by Al-Alamiyah for Arabic characters or Arabic MSX BASIC, I would presume...

Also fast question, can the keyboard key-caps be removed?
Mine are a bit dirty...
