Yes Sony also put SMD components on other side of the board. Yamaha placed them on the same side as the through hole components.

Seiko is the compagny name and sha (社) means company. Epson and Seiko have merged.

"Seikosha (精工舎, Seikōsha) was a branch of the Japanese company Seiko that produced clocks, watches, shutters, computer printers and other devices. It was the root of the manufacturing companies of the Seiko Group."

See also https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%B2%BE%E5%B7%A5%E8%88%8E

Translation:

"Seikosha (Seiko Sha) is Hattori (now Seiko Holdings Corporation is the name that was established company group had identified himself as a manufacturing and development department). In each case, Seiko itself or the founder Hattori family and their affiliated companies were major shareholders.

When Seikosha was established, Hattori Watch Shop was in charge of planning, marketing, and maintenance services, and Seikosha was conducting research and development, design, and manufacturing as a manufacturing department independent of Hattori Watch Shop. Through such "collaboration", SEIKO brand watches have raised the level of technology and have gained worldwide acclaim.

As shown below, all companies have now changed their names to "Seiko", and since 1996 there has been no company that calls Seikosha . Seiko Clock (wall clock, table clock, alarm clock), Morioka Seiko Industry (former subsidiary of Seiko Instruments, now a subsidiary of Seiko Watch; watch), Seiko Epson (watch) continue to manufacture SEIKO brand watches.
"
So before 1996, it's Seikosha for the printers.

OK, I see also 精工社 that is just a diminutive. Anyway this is the branch Seiko Epson that that interests us, not Seikosha.

1985 — Suwa Seikosha and Epson merge to form Seiko Epson Corporation.

Before the merging it's Seikosha, as indicated on the box for GP-50MX

Wow a lot of corporate restructuring and yes Epson and Seiko merged is a valid statement but they where already part of Seiko Group at that time (just separate entities).

Quote:

1996年以降精工舎を称する企業は存在しない。

Since 1996, no company has called Seikosha.

Actually, Seiko seems used only for the watch and Epson for the printers.

Edit: The page below says Seikosha and Seiko Epson is not same !
https://ameblo.jp/kagra/entry-10733301284.html

So I'am okay to back to Seikosha in the wiki and even to separate it from Epson.

I think this article refers to the quality and the prices, saying that most Seikosha printers are cheaper than the expensive Epson printers of the same period (before the fusion probably).
