Allow me to resurrect the thread just a bit: imagine you have the Spanish 8245 model with the Ñ key and the support in the BASIC ROM. As there are not even European MSX 2+, there is no way to keep the Ñ support after the upgrade, right?

There are already patched ROMs for Spanish keyboard. Some of them with F4 support, some others not. I upgraded a couple of 8280. One with Spanish keyboard and one with ingernational keyboard.
Those ROMs should be somwhere in the Net. E-mail me if you don't find them.

That's really good to know, thank you!

I'm wondering, since the kanji rom is written double to a 27c512, would it be possible to have a different rom next to the kanji rom. For example the FM-Pak rom, so it would be possible to build in and use a YM2413 for msx-music.
What would be the best rom layout and/or what extra connections are needed to acces this rom ?

The kanji rom lives in #4000-#bfff in slot3-0. To prevent conflict with the subrom (which lives in #0000-#3fff) cs12 is used so the extra rom is only enabled for #4000-#bfff.
To use the 2nd half of the eeprom for something else some logic could probably be added to use the 2nd half in slot 3-1.

However as Nyyrikki pointed out, the kanji rom is pretty useless is Europe. I think it's possible to combine the msx-music rom and boot logo. The msx-music rom is empty from #7600 to the end and the boot logo starts at #7a00. So just copy the boot logo from the kanji rom (from #7a00 to #7fff ). However, I did not test this Smile

This leaves #8000-#bfff empty for something else, for instance the kun basic from the Sanyo phc-70fd2.

The 16 blocks still would have to be swapped, so the layout would be like this:
#0000-#3fff kun basic
#4000-#7fff msx-music/boot logo
#8000-#bfff kun basic
#c000-#ffff msx-music/boot logo

Another option would be to add a 3rd rom on top of the 2nd and connect this to slot 3-1, but there is no room, the diskdrive is in the way.

Is it really as easy as you are suggesting (remove kanji bios and replace it with kun + modded FM bios), or would it be necessary to do some extensive patching?
Could you point to some ROMs that can be used for this mod? i.e. can you give the checksum or suggest what computers have suitable ROMs?

It should be, in theory Smile I would recommend some testing in openmsx.
I would suggest downloading the openmsx roms.
And from this zip test with phc-70fd2_fmbasic.rom, phc-70fd2_kanjibasic.rom and phc-70fd2_basickun.rom in the systemroms\machines\sanyo\ directory.

So I tested the msx-musix and boot logo combination and it does not work because there is some msx-music stuff all the way at the end of the rom.

However, thanks to the msxnewbios project I was able to compile a boot logo that starts on #7900 instead of #7a00

The roms are available here. Also included is a openmsx configuration to test them.

This has the msx-musix/boot logo rom, the kun basic rom (remember that for this version you have to type _bc to initialize it) and the bios/basic/sub/disk roms.

The bios, basic and sub roms are basically the roms that are on Hans Otten's site but I made some changes:

  • 60hz
  • Function keys changed
  • default screen mode during boot changed from screen 1 to 0, so messages from i.e. mfrs are shown in width 80
  • skip f4 register stuff
  • hold h to boot in 50hz
  • default clockchip settings (as I removed the battery):
    • screen 0
    • width 80
    • color 15,4,4
    • key off
    • keyclick off
    • 2400 baud
  • hold a during boot to skip slot 1
  • hold b during boot to skip slot 2

Most of these changes are actually inspired by NYYRIKKI :)

These are great and the msxnewbios project is also VERY interesting! Thanks!
The google page you linked is not working for me, but the source can still be found on the Internet Archive.

I finished my upgrade without FM. I'm gonna take a different approach to add FM, since I need to add the other components as well. I will make a pcb to fit underneath the keyboard. Right now everything is working. Tnx Philip.

(in English, for the other members:)
Thats why you not answered on my F4 suggestion, I didn't know that you was working on a alternative methode for the F4. Is it possible to use this method (without F4 latch & modifyed ROMS) into NMS 8250/55/80?
