I'm always impressed what people can pull off on the C64, but I also think it's a pretty awkward beast. It is not as programmable as the MSX (at least for beginners), so it is less inviting to start creating your own things. Also the keyboard usually sucks, most MSXes are much better (at least for cursor keys). C64 is also a bit odd with respect to having joysticks plugged in port 2 (why 2?) for most games. The disk drive is also pretty bad.
But on the other hand, as I said, people did great GREAT stuff on the C64. Really astonishing. You wouldn't expect them from the graphics specs. And the sound is unique. Very distinct and bound to give many people a nostalgic feeling.

I somehow have the feeling that only Konami really got everything out of the MSX1 (think about games like The Maze of Galious or King's Valley II) and there are not that many games that reach that level. On C64 there seem to be more. And the scrolling makes it a better games machine in many cases.

Still, I grew up with MSX, so MSX is my thing. I might want to get a good Amiga one day, though! Smile

Some friends of mine had C64s in the mid-80's, with very cool games like Boulderdash. I only had a Videopac console at the time, and was really drooling about having a C64 computer for Christmas. What a dream machine that was!

And then, my best friend received an MSX VG-8020 with Nemesis 2...

I never did a side-by-side comparison of MSX Boulderdash and C64 Boulderdash, but I actually think the MSX version is very good!

ok, yzi said the colors in his home, that's true.
the C64 has better gray. but the brown is not always better. sometimes the 3 red of MSX are better.

Haha yeah, the picture was just run through my SCREEN 2 converter without trying to make it look good. Wink The point was that the MSX1 color palette is not really nice to look at. The C64's selection of colors feels much more like an actual artistically sensible choice, something that an artist might actually pick for a piece.

i cannot say about tms palette, but c64 one is well known to be not a good palette with all color washed out
