My vote also for an English translation!

Hey, I've heard about this game. It's also for the Commodore 64, Apple II, and Famicom. Apparently the MSX2 version is the best of the bunch. I'd love to see this game in English. Smile

I'm not sure I'd say the MSX version is the best one, but it is nice that at least it got reprogrammed from scratch rather than getting sloppily ported like so many other microcomputer games of the era. There are a lot of things missing from the MSX version, though -- the full intro, for starters. Plus, the translation to Japanese is pretty bare-bones -- almost all the humor of the original game has been removed, and character names have been changed to shoehorn in additional Sherlock + Watson references.

Still a lot of fun to play, regardless. But if it does get translated, I'd suggest trying to revert the text back to the original version as much as possible, rather than translating the existing Japanese, as the existing Japanese is much duller than the original text was.

I will not translate the whole game because there are too many texts. (adresse &h10070 - &h14170).
I do not understand Japanese at all and use automatic translators on the Web, it would take me too much time.
Also in the middle of the game, even watching the video below, the answers to memorize do not match what appears when I play. So, I'm stopped and I can't finish the game.
If someone wants my partial version to play a little, ask me on my email, I will send him.
I did a little walkthrough to help.

if someone wants to continue the translation, I can send him the character tables used
because there are only Japanese characters in the original

Again, I wouldn't recommend translating the Japanese at all -- pull text from the Commodore 64 version instead, and substitute that for the Japanese wherever possible. The Japanese is poorly translated from the English -- losing all the game's humor, oversimplifying the game's text, and changing characters' names and identities as well.

Even if the Japanese were OK, though, I would say one should NEVER, EVER use automatic translators on the web for a fan-translation patch. The result will never be accurate to the original language, may not even be comprehensible, and will generally end up presenting the game poorly, likely turning a lot of people away from enjoying it. If there's a game you want to see translated, I would say work with an actual translator to make it happen -- there should be enough of us out there that you'll be able to find someone willing to give it a shot with a little asking around.

I understand thinking that it's better for someone to be able to play the game and understand just a little bit than not be able to play it because they can't understand any of it, but I would argue that for genres like RPGs and adventure games -- which are heavily reliant on their story and characters -- fan-translating without being able to fully understand the Japanese and without being able to accurately represent it in English does more harm than good. It's better to respect the original vision of the game, and if you're not able to do that, you probably shouldn't be fan-translating it at all.

That's just my two cents on the matter, though. Others may feel differently. But I genuinely think this is a bad idea, and will only result in giving people the wrong idea about the game, and potentially tainting its reputation in the English-speaking world. Especially in this case, where the Japanese is already a poor translation of a much better English script.

@Wyrdwad Oh, that much content has been cut from the MSX2 version. The HG101 article made it seem like it's one of the better versions of the game with less busy-work, but I guess not. As much as I enjoy the MSX, I think I'll rather play this game on Commodore 64, where it's in proper English.
