Wont you be satisfied with a HIGH-powered VDP...meaning same methods can be used to drive it but it would be faster no sprite limits .very fast blitter and such?
This would still let you program it like you would the original MSX2 VDP but you'll have more power..

retroleum is far more than a high powered vdp, it also have some other nice things, sound for example

I would definitely go for a memory mapper and a slot expander with I/O slots. In japan they sell a 16MB memory mapper which can has internal sub slots to get 4 x 4MB, but it can also operate as a ‘regular’ 4MB in unexpanded slot. I think that would help a lot for vgmplay addicts. You can read about it here.

And 128Mbit SDRAM is quite cheap, but probably only 3V nowadays... but I don’t think that is a real issue, or is it?

If you ask me, I would vote for a combo music card - separately configurable stereo OPLL/OPL1/OPM/OPNA/SCC/SCC+/OPL4 backwards compatible with OPL2-3, 4MB sample RAM, 2MB ROM. The OPL4 should be as a physical chip, others can be FPGA-emulated. A proper, headphone-compatible output. As a bonus - equilizer module with LED level indicators.

We, at RBSC had such a project in mind, but we decided to go for something more complex and useful.

yess this can be done.. but would make it complex and expensive... and a long design/development cycle..
Will people go for that? or will I be left with hardware no one can or is willing to afford?

I am rather surprised there is no wifi-solution yet?!

But I thought the Moonsound was the Ultimate soundcart for the MSX already?

Moonsound is just one device for MSX. It can't output OPLL, OPM, OPNA, PSG, SCC and SCC+. So it's quite limited in its functionality. What I propose is a combo solution.

WiFi + SD Card + USB port. This would fit in a regular ROM cartridge (no multi-slot). If you want to go the multi-slot route, add mapped RAM and perhaps Flash ROM too.

At the very least WiFi + SD Card, so in a single cartridge I have Internet (hopefully with powerful enough hardware to support native TLS) + storage. Please please please.

WiFi is in the works by XaviRompe (XSWifi cartridge), with UNAPI support... :-)

I'm at about 80% in the creation of an UNAPI driver for a new FPGA system that is in the prototype phase, it uses ESP8266 through a serial I/O (specific one, not MSX BIOS standard), and with that system using KDL OCM as a basis and running at 8MHz cpu speed I've been able to reach 33KB/s through Sofa FTP, and about 14KB/s running at default 3.58MHz cpu speed. Still there are a few quirks I'm working to get it at 100% reliability, but I would expect to finish it in a couple of weeks.

Although this driver is for this specific FPGA system (which I'm not the designer, I'm just one of the beta testers and I really liked the idea of making the UNAPI driver for it, no strings attached), I've talked to Fzanoto (that designed an ESP8266 Wifi Cartridge https://www.msx.org/forum/msx-talk/hardware/wifi-card ) as I believe that with some small changes to the firmware design of the PIC controller we can re-use the same driver for a WiFi Card, let's hope the changes are really small/easy as I've initially thought and that he can pick this idea up, if so, we could have a MSX Wifi cartridge not costing a kidney (Brazilian expression for costing an arm and leg :P ). Of course, the more the merrier, so a new project will be very welcome. ;)
