Update: Retroworks announces the final price of the game with two different finishes (shipping costs not included.):

  • DELUXE: 45€
  • PREMIUM: 70€

As we reported just few months ago, the official launching of Los amores de Brunilda game by Retroworks, in cooperation with bitvision (Fernando Manuel García), is already a reality. Technically, this new production excels in every aspect and it is not surprising taking into account the staff involved. Right now you can download the game for free at Retroworks' site but the team is already working on a physical format and they will share more details next week. Some game features:

  • The original ZX game had a great scripting engine which has been adapted and upgraded for this version.
  • Screen 5, 8 by 8 scroll tiles, based on 16×16 tile set. The speed comes from double buffer & cache to refrain from constantly redraw the whole screen. It uses software sprites and some background animations (fire, water, etc). Combat stages use hardware sprites.
  • Two 16 color palettes during game play. Upper half and lower half respectively.
  • The menu screen has two different graphic modes, SC5 & SC3 with multiple screens-splits, dynamic palette and vertical scroll hardware use.
  • Several different languages included into the game. Nelo & Quqo language changes the main characters and they way of speaking..
  • If certain Retroworks games are found in other cartridge slot, certain Easter eggs will be activated...
  • The game has a password system to continue your game, just like the original ZX version, but now you’re able to save the game into the original game-cartridge and the default selected language.
  • Music has been rewritten in order to be played on SCC + PSG, resulting in richer music.
  • The music replayer is not standard. A new specific one has been developed in order to have really optimized all the CPU time spent on playing the background music.
  • High resolution opening 512x424x16.
  • Very improved and colorful MSX2 graphics.
  • Game VDP interrupts go for 60Hz, 50Hz during game menu.

Would you like to embark on an adventure and feel the experience of the old RPG games again? Now is your chance!

Thank you so much for another crafted gem! The graphics are indeed *very* impressive. Big smile

I also did some quick tests on some of the known troublemakers, and these were the results:

  • Sony HB-F500P: passed
  • Toshiba HX-23F: passed
  • Victor HC-95: passed
  • Turbo support: works fine and the game runs even smoother. But sadly, the game doesn't enable the turbo automatically on machines that have the CHGCPU routine on BIOS
  • NEOS MA-20 and clones: failed
  • Acid1Test: failed
  • Acid2Test: failed

I'll snag a cartridge version of this as soon as humanly possible, but I'd love to play it on my FS-A1WX in the meantime. There's a problem, though: the only flash rom cartridge I have available is an older Megaflashrom SCC+ with no SD card slot, and I have no hard disks or anything of the sort, meaning I have to load games onto it via floppy disk using OPFX. And this rom is roughly the size of TWO floppy disks.

Does anyone know if there's a way to split a larger rom file onto multiple floppies and concatenate it into my Megaflashrom using OPFX?

I know it's a bit of a long-shot, but hey, I figured it was worth asking! Wink

I ran it only briefly to take a short look, but: great that all the colours seem to be less saturated than your average MSX RPG. Wink Looks very fresh, in a way!

I've been playing it for quite a while immediately and it's VERY cool. Great graphics, gameplay and music. I think it's the first scrolling (even though 8x8, but that's like Ys and Xak series) MSX2 RPG made in Europe, isn't it? It's playing as smoothly as Ys. Smile

Already legendary!

I think it's a video adventure (looking for objects, finding out where to use them, evade dangers) since there is no EXP, HP, LVL, GOLD, The player doesn't have a status or equipment and all the characteristic elements associated to an RPG.
To me it reminds me more of "La Abadia del Crimen" (The Abbey of the Crime) which is a huge compliment since I really love that game!

HOW do you guys load this wonderful game on the OCM (1ChipMSX) and other FPGA clones???
I tried with MGLOAD and it will only load on SLOT 2 if I setup an ASCII 16 mapper there and then a MEGA RAM + SCC, then do MGLOAD /S02 and RESET.
But thats a workaround and I am not sure its going to work all thru the game...
Maybe a floppy disk image would be better and less limiting than such a BIG ROM?

This game runs very well on OCM. You can install the latest firmware and start SofaRun at 3.58MHz. That damn boss drives me crazy but the skeleton will be mine! Wink

The interlaced screen does not give problems at 15KHz. So I suggest cutting the audio pin on the scart cable to remove the interference in Zemmix Neo, then it will be enough to use the external speakers. VGA is flickering, sorry.

Folks,

I managed to run Brunilda on my SM-X (Rom Type: Konami and SofaRun picks the ESE SCC Device), but I could not find a way yet to run it on A1MKII or F1XV with a USB/SD Mapper (512Kb) and a Double RAM cart.
Is it possible to run Brunilda using this setup?

TIA,

Unfortunately it is not, you need at least a device with 1.5MB (Mega Bytes) of RAM or Flash that supports the Konami SCC mapper. It should work a.o. on MMCSD, Carnivore2, MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD, GR8NET and FlashJacks.

SofaRun can use the MegaRAM as well as the FlashROM on the Carnivore2. The MegaRAM is limited in size to roughly 700kB. ROMs bigger than that (like Brunilda) need to be flashed. To be able to do so SofaRun needs a dedicated/reserved area in the Carnivore2’s flash chip. To reserve this space you have to flash 1 out of 3 ROM files that are located in the SofaRun application directory. You will find a CARNIROM.ZIP that holds the 3 ROM files. They differ in size of 1MB (too small for Brunilda), 2MB and 4MB. So you have to flash either the 2MB or 4MB variant using C2MAN. After that SofaRun will be able to run Brunilda.
