Is it always recommended to have a Megaflashrom with 512kB? Also on a 128kB machine? In the opening post of this thread it says "DOS2/Nextor with Sofarun doesn't work too well with only 128kB of RAM".

It is not mandatory on a 128K machine afaik, but I certainly recommend it just in case you ever use the cartridge on a 64K machine (like MSX1 or MSX2+) because without the extra memory DOS2 doesn’t work. Also if you want to use certain software like VGMPlay having more memory is necessary. Maybe SofaRun also likes to have more memory in certain situations, I don’t know about that.

If you ask me the option without RAM should just be removed from the store, I’ve seen too often that people regret it later. Also the competitors like Carnivore2 come with more memory for less money.

SofaRun works for ROMs and DSKs images on MSX with 128KB only, but you have to use the standard COMMAND2.COM shell, the extended version by TNI requires extra 16KB.

Problem is you do not have any segment left when DSK images are launched, so the SD Snatcher Project Melancholia translation doesn’t not work (but the original does). That only justifies the extra memory IMHO Smile Most (all?) of Japanese commercial games are not using memory mapper, but some European/Brazilian demos and games do.

Anyway, always better to have extra 512KB!

It may pay you after, f.e. if you later decide to buy some SFG clone to play some nice music, you'll need more memory for VGMs (and 512K is enough for most YM2151 tunes, but 128K is not enough for most of them)

Yes you can send it to Manuel from the msxcartridgeshop and he can upgrade it for €50.

You can buy an extension with more RAM for less. The MMM for example. With it you will even have an extra sound chip to play Colecovision and SG-1000 games.

I get it. It's the segments that DOS2 takes for itself. It took some digging in my memory, but I remember how it works. In the nineties I had bought a DOS2 cartridge built into a monstrous MT Telcom II case. But without a harddisk, DOS2 never had any real use for me.

BTW, this also means that while 128kB is the bare minimum, 256kB and up will probably all be the same? So if I double the memory of my 8235 I'll be fine as well? Options, options...

I had a C2 running on a Toshiba HX10 MSX1, I haven't tried the MFRSCC+SD on MSX1, but I don't see why it wouldn't work, perhaps the ROMdisk might have to be disabled?

Good evening,
I have recently been a happy owner of a Philips MNS8280. I was considering buying a MegaFlashRom but I don't know what to get. I have also read and seen the SofaRun on youtube, is it another type of MegaFlashRom? What do you recommend? Thank you Smile

SofaRun is just a program to easily browse and run software (mostly ROM images, disk images and tape images) on your real MSX, especially from mass storage. It supports many devices to run the software on.

MegaFlashROM is hardware (a cartridge), and so is Carnivore 2, Flashjacks, Gr8Net and several other cartridges with flash and other features (like mass storage).

What do you want to do with your 8280?

Load classic roms for msx and improved roms. Upload .dsk and .cas files, etc. etc. What they all do! The carnivore2 seems to have better features than the MFR, but I was told that despite the updates it still has compatibility problems with some software. Is it there ??

Than buy any flash cartridge available as Manuel suggest (MFR, Carnivore2, GR8NET, SD Mapper...) and you can boot from SD containing tons of ROMs, DSKs and CAS. After this you only need a software like Sofarun to easily navigate and load the software contained in the SD.
