The hatch is to hold the batteries in place, the batteries are “needed” for the real-time clock and system settings. With modern flash carts booting into Nextor the system settings are really not that important. System clock is only thing if you are picky that you would loose out on, if you get/have a GR8NET that can set system clock during voor via network (NTP protocol).
I am using my Turbo-Rs without batteries because I use them only irregularly and don't want the batteries to leak. What is a bit annoying you can get crazy dates in MSXDOS(2) for new files.
Fortunately the batteries in these computers will not leak on anything trivial, but better keep them out anyway. Not having the hatch doesn't earn the beauty price, but then again you don't see it and don't miss it.
There are batteries that do not leak. I have been using Eneloop batteries for at least ten years. They do not leak. I've recharged once only.

I am doing the same thing.

Lithium batteries are a good alternative for alkaline, in Europe e.g. Energizer and Varta sell Lithium AA batteries. These are marketed as “pro batteries” and more expensive, but since they are internally solid they do not leak and also last longer. (Note, Lithium batteries are not to be confused with rechargeable Li-Ion ones.)
Are the FS-A1ST batteries rechargeable?
I placed non-rechargeable Varta lithium batteries to prevent leaks, and now I'm worried that the system is trying to charge them.

My ST imported from Japan came with a battery compartment ruined by leaking batteries. The battery terminals are completely gone. Very nasty stuff.
Panasonic builds the best rechargable batteries in "affordable range of price" in AA & AAA (also in Li-On).
In my opinion are slightly above of LG Industrial grade but like the Sony ones there are a lot but a lot of fraudulent clones) while Panasonic is not a very pirated trademark compared with Sony or LG
Eneloop model is the best for this kind of usage (the white ones) also it has some cheaper models of rechargable AA/AAA batteries like "Accu" of "Infinium" that are very good too.
There is a variant (Pro) that are black colored for machines that demand more intense draining like flash lamps for photographic cameras.
Of course there are batteries like "Nitecore" that are the most expensive and best batteries I have ever tested but are very very hard to find in physical shops.
So If you want a very very good battery for many years I recommend you Eneloop rechargable white label as gdx recommends you.

The machine will not charge the batteries, you can safely use your non-rechargeable batteries (just don’t leave them in too long). As mentioned if you want to prevent damage to the terminals by battery leakage, get some Eneloops (the basic white ones) and you’ll be fine and they will not drain quickly or leak ever.
