As the first DEVA cartridges finally arrive at their new homes and the first players starting to share their experiences, the mailbox of Team Deva started to get flooded with mails asking to order the game. So, Team Deva decided to do a small extra batch for those people who missed the first preorder.
For the people who missed it, a little description:
The MSX2 game Angelic Warrior DEVA is a fast-paced action-RPG with Psycho World and Valis 2 reminiscences.
It features quick parallax scrolling, 10 large environments to explore, colorful graphics, animated visual stages and a great soundtrack.

Important specifications and notes:

  • System: MSX2/2+/turbo R
  • Memory: 128 Kb minimum
  • Music: MSX Music and/or MSX Audio (Moonsound can be used instead of MSX Audio) (the game doesn't have exclusive OPL4 soundtracks or SFX)
  • Format: 2048Kb MegaROM with S-Ram
  • Save game in cartridge
  • V9990 NOT required
  • Joymega support has been removed
  • The game comes on a 2048kb cartridge, therefore the price is higher than the standard 64kb cartridges.
  • Game doesn't work on: Toshiba HX-34 with 64kb of ram

Btw the game should work on the toshiba hx-34 if you trow in a ram expansion on another primary slot. So deva in cartridge port 1 and your extra mapper in the other cartridge slot. Fmpak should work as well if using a slotexpander. The same counts for all the msx2+ machines out there. Someone already tried this on a 64k msx2+ machine?

Didn't try it but if i coded it correct it has to work.

It would btw also work from any slot as long as the ram is not is the same primary slot. The reason is simple. No subslot switching. Not enough clockcycles left for that.

What you can do is use openMSX to try it up front on all these configurations and then get an idea how your code is dealing with them. Then later verify on real hardware as well.

I don't know how works your game... but if you have RAM always visible in (0C000h-0FFFFh), you just need to add a LD(0FFFFh),A...
with the suitable values calculated at the start of the ROM, right?

But , there's no problem in put them in different slots....

My copy is still in the mail (I live in Japan, so it's going to take a bit longer to reach me), but I'm really excited to play it! I do have a question, though, if anyone in the know might be able to provide an answer:

From what I read, this game supports using OPL4 in lieu of OPL1, if you happen to have a Moonsound cartridge but not an MSX-audio cartridge. And indeed, I don't have a Philips Music Module, but I do have a Dal-So-Ri cartridge. So I should be good to go, right?

My real question, though, is about how to hook it up to my TV. The Dal-So-Ri cartridge is stereo, whereas the MSX-audio standard is mono. Is the game's audio meant to be MB-stereo, with OPLL coming from one speaker and OPL1 coming from the other, or were the music tracks and sound effects created with no specific intention of being listened to in stereo?

The reason I ask is because I have my system's regular audio output set up with a mono splitter, and I have my Dal-So-Ri cartridge set up with an RCA red-white output. Then on my TV's composite in, I have two RCA splitters set up so I can simultaneously plug the white cord from both the MSX and the Dal-So-Ri into the white RCA jack, and the red cord from both the MSX and the Dal-So-Ri into the red jack, ensuring that my OPLL mono audio plays through both speakers (dual mono), while my OPL4 Moonsound audio plays through the proper left and right channels.

I'm wondering if it would be best for this game to switch it up, though, so that only the OPLL plays through one speaker, and only the OPL4 plays through the other?

I mean, I guess I can figure it out with some experimentation, but nonetheless, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask so I go into this game with the proper audio setup from the very start. Wink

I haven't tried it though. Don't have enough slots...

Yes, the optimal configuration is MSX Music left, MSX Audio right and PSG centered. At least, that is the setup I used when composing the music so I figure that is the optimal way to playback it. Other configurations are possible ofcourse but I know from experience that a mono setup will sound a lot worse.

Yeah, that's almost optimal indeed. PSG does drums and soundeffects so having the PSG centered gives it that little more punch but having it left is no biggie Wink

So far I played on a turboR only (so just OPLL) and it's really not bad at all! Smile I should arrange cables and mixer and stuff to get it properly played on my stereo... (it's coming out of the Sony KX-14CP1 right now...)

For it to be optimal you would need a slot expander with an OPLL and an OPL1 (compatible) in it. Both will need their own audio-out jack and have their sound in pin 49 cut on the pcb (most opl4 cartridges have this, except the one from technobytes). That way their audio will not enter the MSX and its monitor output. Built in MSX-Music will unfortunatly come with the PSG audio.
I haven't tried yet, but a MegaFlashROMSCC+ SD could be in handy here with its built in PSG clone (however you will need to make an audio out on the cartridge because it's not default on this cartridge). A Carnifore 2, a Gr8NET or a Darky should work as a seperate PSG output as well. In fact, having a Gr8NET for all your audio would work in this case. It has its own audio out, there's a switch on pin 49 and it has MSX Music, MSX Audio and PSG built in which can be configured left, right and center. No need for a slot expander there.

Yeeeeeah, none of that is happening. Heheh. I don't have the money, the space, the inputs, the time, or even (in some cases) the know-how to mess with slot expanders or modifying MFRs or any of that. To be perfectly honest, I actually rather dislike the OPL1 and OPL4 cartridges in general partially because the sound is separate from the MSX proper, so using them always feels like a bit of a cheat to me -- like a bodge to make the MSX perform beyond its means. I'm honestly kind of anxious to get my hands on the game and compare the full MB-stereo soundtrack with what it sounds like as OPLL-only, and if it sounds OK to me OPLL-only, I may choose to nix the OPL4 cart and just play the rest of the game in OPLL so I don't have a mess of wires jutting out all around my MSX that I have to swap around every time I play any game other than this one (sorry Robert!).

It sounds like it might be a fun experiment in some ways to mess with this, though, so if anyone is able to successfully pull this off, it'd be cool to read about it. But for me personally... no thanks! I'm good. Heheh.

Don't worry. Played the game on a bare turbo machine and not even through proper speakers and still the sound and music is bliss. Everything is quality quality quality and quality.

MSX-Music only is the base line of this game and that's quite high level. The rest is only extra.
Fooling around with cloned PSG is something I wouldn't want to try either, just not interrested, but it's possible.
OPL1 = MSX-Audio and very much a part of MSX. There's no "cheating" there, it was there even before MSX-Music, heck, it even has MSX printed on the chip. The OPL4 is just compatible with it, so it's an extra service to those who do own OPL4 but not OPL1.
A slot expander with an MSX-Music with line out (many have that) and an MSX-Audio with a line out (all have that) gives you the possibility to hear the music as it's intended. If it was a disk game, you could put both straight into your MSX.

Complete computer left (from RGB cable, or audio out RCA on your ST/WX) and MSX-Audio right (from its audio out RCA) will give you a lot of extra joy as well, even if pin 49 is not cut and it bleeds through your MSX-Music/PSG audio.

Hmm. MSX-audio is the Philips Music Module, right? I don't own a Music Module cartridge, but I was under the impression it, too, required outputting audio directly from the cartridge, just like with Moonsound carts. Is that not the case?

Either way, not trying to be a Negative Nelly. I'm just a grumpy old man sometimes who doesn't like dealing with multiple audio output wires. Wink

The msx-audio = opl1 + ADPCM (and other features). The opl4 is 100% compatible with the opl1 and the msx-audio is 100% compatible with the opl1, but the opl4 is not 100% compatible with the msx-audio Wink

Oh, interesting. I've been operating under the assumption that the Music Module worked just like the Moonsound cartridge all this time. I had no idea it could output directly to the MSX.

One of these days, I'll have to get my hands on one so I can play around with it. I want to own one just for that spectacularly awful cover/label art, if nothing else. It's so late '80s/early '90s, it's almost painful! Heheh.

Do I need to undress Deva in order to beat the level 4 boss? I can't see anything happening there. I think I have hit it many many time, yet the boss is very much alive.

That boss is quite hard to hit. You have to hit it precicely in the floating eye thingie. Jump or use a special weapon.

...Honestly, I have some issues with this game. It's technically impressive, but I don't really love it. Wink I'll give it some more time, though -- it might grow on me!

Hi everybody, no need to be uneasy. We had a delay with the manufacturing of the cartridges but that is solved now. Last friday a big box of cartridges arrived at my house so now I can assemble each game and ship them. Sorry for the lack of information. There was not much to tell you all because I didn't know anything either (and I have a new job that was really fu***ng hectic the last few months).
