Hey jr, I was wondering which parts of fMSX core you have used. Did you change a lot? I was asking myself this while playing Nemesis2 Tongue I almost can't believe it works this smoothly on a Nokia3650 with its limited CPU power. I thought the fMSX core asks quite some CPU power....

And how about openMSX? Is an openMSX version of an MSX emulator for Symbian a reasonable option?

Hi jr!

1. I think I'll generate a random UID, not sure where it's really necessary to get an official UID just for the ROMs - and with the IrDA/BT-frature, this installation method wouldn't be so important anymore.
And besides, creating a random UID seems to be much easier to me Tongue

2. And are the directory structures the same?

3. The IrDA/BT feature would really be an very interesting addon in my ROMPackager, and it'll make things much easier than it (already) is Smile
I like that idea, but unfortunately I don't have much coding experience w/ these communication devices (to be exactly it's 0). And furthermore I only have BlueTooth here, I sold my IrDA-device few weeks ago Crying
I only need some info sources on that and communications w/ Symbian based phones, and of course also time to code. Wink

And how about openMSX? Is an openMSX version of an MSX emulator for Symbian a reasonable option?

Series60 proccesor is a Risc ARM at 104 Mhz. It is enoguh to handle fMSX emulator, but I doubt that it could handle openMSX at reasonable speed, since openMSX is a much heavier emulator (also much more powerful...)

Yeah, but openMSX is very modular, right? So it is easy to make some kind of minimal configuration?

Well... If you take into account openMSX uses sub-instruction accuracy on the Z80 (It emulates every T-state seperately, and not just the whole instruction), and that's just one example.
fMSX is a piece of cake, compared to that.

GuyveR800: So you think a Symbian version of openMSX which runs on current Symbian OS based phones is a no go? First, the phones must have more powerful CPUs?

Latok, the logic of the fMSX core is almost intact. Perhaps the biggest difference is that the original fMSX is C code but in my version the core is rewritten in C++ and I don't have any static global data like in the original where almost all data is static global.

I don't know enough about the internal working of openMSX but I suppose it is more complex like GuyveR800 said and thus probably it would be slower. My original goal with the emulator was to be able to play MSX games, not perfect MSX emulation, and that's why I chose fMSX as the base (and also because I knew it had already been ported to numerous platforms successfully before). Perhaps someone who understands openMSX architecture well enough can comment on its possibilites on Symbian OS. It's not just the CPU power but also what other special requirements it has on the underlying OS (like timing for example).

Sousuke, the directory structures for the emulator are the same in a and b version. Like already pointed out by Latok and karloch, direct file transfer from/to the emulator is not really necessary as it is possible to transfer files with the phones' PC suite software. Nevertheless, I feel that the ROMPackager is a necessary tool for those that do not wish to handle files directly and prefer SIS packets. The use of separate UIDs for the ROM SIS files would definetely make things easier from dependency point of view so if you have time to implement that I think it would be a good enhancement. Thank you for your continuing interest in the emulator and your development efforts with the ROMPackager, I'm sure the users of the emulator have found it useful! Smile
