IMHO if it can't be played it is a tech demo, not a game.

For 3D sake, I'd say that a good Filmation game would be more than enough. And AFAIK there's no fimaltion game for MSX2/2+ screen modes. That would be really cool.

I'd stick to wolf's remark: perfectly doable MSX is much better than a game with lots of restrictions/limitations. Real 3D is cool. 4 FPS is not.

Life in the Fast Lane has a smooth engine, and dull gameplay.
Outrun (MSX1) has a wonderful soundtrack and awful gameplay.
Car Fighter has good gameplay and simple graphics.

But now, try to imagine for instance a racing game with an engine as smooth as Life in the Fast Lane, music as cool as Outrun (MSX1), and a gameplay as good as Car FIghter. Wink

I´d say it´s a matter of innovation. If your game has something new to show, be it in graphics, sound or gameplay, good. If your game has innovations in EVERY aspect, that would be cool.

And technically speaking, as long as your game pushes the MSX to the limits without sacrificing gameplay, that´s perfect. Wink

IMHO, the main problem with MSXDev games so far is that I´ve seen good gameplay with average MSX graphics, and good technology with average gameplay. I wonder how cool would be to see a technically good game with impressive gameplay for the MSX (such as Penguin Adventure, Skooter, Hydlide 3, Knightmare etc.)

I could say the same. But try to imagine a game like Elite but with more action, or a Tempest 2000 like game (dots instead of lines and 8x8 pixels background FX), or even an RPG like Green Crystal, only occupying 1/4 of the screen and with monochrome graphics, but a Wolf3D like engine... Wink

All them would be limited in some aspect, but with a cool feature that would enhance their gameplay. Smile

Yes, except that the problem is usually the balance between "technology" (not graphics) and "gameplay". I strongly prefer gameplay rather than tecchie stuff. I like to play on my MSX, not to see things that can be done much better on my four-years-old PC.

I have the same opinion as pitpan. Technically the MSX has nothing to do when compared to new platforms (and even not so new -think about SNES, and even NES-). Thus, trying to achieve the "tecchie" things of new machines on MSX will result on something unplayable. Of course, I am talking about the MSXdev, which focuses on games. Tecchie stuff is welcome for the demoscene, indeed.

A different thing is the game concept. There are some interesting game concepts in new platforms that could be "imported" to MSX. But... I also believe that most of the game conceptes were invented in the 70s-80s. Just take a look at the first Atari games and you will see what I'm talking about.

I'd like to know the idea of RyJuZo regarding to Hitman, what "fake 3D" means exactly. And, I also agree with pitpan at this point: focus on one project. I really would like to see your Knightmare III finished, as well as to see the ".EXE" of the tools you have developed.

Regarding to the subject, games I do NOT like to see in the MSXdev, my answer is clear: boring games.

"Fake 3D" = not calculated real-time with vectors etc. but ready-made tiles like Dungeon Master MSX, Green Crystal, Outer Limits Maze Game etc...?

(Just my guess)

I think Donkey Kong Country is a great example of Fake 3D and could perhaps be doable on MSX. With GFX9000 it certainly can but maybe even on a standard TR.

Guillian's port of "La Abadía del Crimen" for MSX2 ;-)

...but indeed, it would be cool to see brand new filmation SC8 games Big smile.
If someone knows the Oric scene, a new and *extremely* cool isometric adeventure has been presented recently: Space 1999, based on the 70's popular TV series. The video is only the intro; but the game is really astouding.

Btw, the topic has turned out a "games I would like to see" thread again...:RNFF:

Its great to see that we are positive people that want to create stuff and not try to limit ourselves and the scene.

And adding to that, there are no games I don't want to see in msxdev. All games are welcome.

A game that is not at all original won't maybe score as high among the judges, but a low scoring game is much better than no game at all !

Well. Actually I'd love to see an arcade-alike pacman clone. The Namcot version, although highly playable, has very poor graphics and does not include the two player mode. I'm not against existing game clones if it means porting games from other systems and try to get the maximum out of the MSX capabilities.

I'd suggest to dig a bit in the early 80s arcade games. There are jewels there ready to be converted to MSX.

there was one on pc (sadly not msx) which was called capman and introduced an arsenal of weaponry. I really liked that one....
