Looks very good! But could look even better if MSX2 specs would be used. I Think the reason it looks this good is the excellent usage of black pixels and shadows. Keep up the good work Smile

And it would look even better if PS3 specs were used, but it is not the case. Tongue

Excellent work, guys! Graphics look impressive and sound is great too.

Just one question: does the use C language reduce development time when compared to assembler for MSX games? I'm not so sure, and that's why I am asking it. Considering the type of game, assembler won't be required except for some little tricks and speed up the most time-critical routines.

Thanks. We have done some experiments using SCREEN5 and we have done some investigation on GFX9000. But we came to the conclusion that we could not reproduce the same features as in SCREEN2. SCREEN4 would be the only option but then we only have the 8 sprites on a line as an added feature. The color palette is already adapted when running on an MSX2 (or higher). So it's not an option for us anymore.

Anyway pixeling in SCREEN2 gives me an nice retro feeling. Especially the default MSX1 colours....Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

I do want to make some GFX9000 game in the future. But that is for later (I hope). We have plenty of good ideas we would like to realize. But for now we focus on one main project. Only Demonseed is working on multiple bigger projects at the moment (I'm clueless how he finds the time and inspiration for it Question ).

It does for me. I do not understand ASM very well. So for me C is the only option.
But in general I think it makes it a lot easier to work on the code with multiple persons.
Our game-engine is constructed out of several parts that each perform a task. Sometimes we leave the code alone for some weeks/months. Then the C makes it easier to read and pick it up again.......

Perhaps Arturo can tell more about it. He's the real coder. I main contibution is to introduce bugs (in code and data Evil ).

Being a programmer by profession I say that any code in any language should be organized and COMMENTED in such a way that you can always come back to it after a long period of time and still understand what and how it was done.
If you dont organize and dont comment your code very well it will always be a problem reexamening your code no matter the language. (it's then called spaghetti code)

I would recommend assembly on the MSX because of being a low performance machine. C (or any other Highlevel language) will always create some overhead. And on low performing machines it will be noticable ! That's my experience anyway ....And I've been programming for a long long time...

Asm is really not that difficult...there are plenty of good tutorials...just takes practice...and it's FUN !!!

How about leaving some room for surprise. Wink

Personally I think that asm requires much more comments than higher languages. Good code can be just as clear as a comments. On msx you're always optimising, which often is much less clear a few months on.

All true! Although it appears your mind needs to work a certain way to be able to agree with that.

Well. Without C the project wouldn't even be. Anyway for a non-hardcore coder C is perfect.

After all the final result counts. fast or slow..... As long as it is fun to play.
We'll try to make video once we have time. Just to give an example of the performance of C.
I don't want to brag. But you might be surprised what C can do.

I agree, the good is to take advantage of the mix.

There are a lot of tasks in a game that if coded in asm are extremely boring... Coding them in C allow,if speed is not an issue to concentrante on most critical parts. Wink

Well o.k., a little tip of the curtain. Smile

THE ARBA MINCH FOREST IN THE
HIGHLANDS OF SOUTH ETHIOPIA
HIDED A TREMENDOUS SECRET.

MANY, MANY MILLENNIA AGO, WHEN
GOD HAD CREATED MAN, HE PLACED
A MAGIC SPRING AT THE HEART OF
THIS FOREST...
THE 'CRADLE OF LIFE'

NEXT HE APPOINTED ALL OF HIS
CREATURES TO GUARD OVER IT UNTIL
SATAN WOULD RISE FROM THE ABYSS
TO ASSAIL THE CREATION.

THE PEOPLE OF ARBA MINCH BUILT
A FOUNTAIN AND A SHRINE AT THE
SPRING TO HONOUR AND PROTECT
IT UNTO THE END OF TIME.

THE HOLY WATER PROVIDED AN
ABUNDANCE OF FOOD, RESOURCES,
WISDOM AND HEAVENLY INSPIRATION.
THE PEOPLE LIVED IN PEACE AND
BROTHERLY LOVE.

THE SPRING HAD REPLENISHED ALL
LIFE AND VIRTUE FROM DEEP WITHIN
THE FOREST AS MANKIND SPREADED
OUT OVER THE WORLD.

HOWEVER, AS THE WORLD CHANGED,
LATER GENERATIONS DOUBTED THE
POWERS OF THE FOUNTAIN, SOON
LEADING TO NEGLECT OF THE
ONCE CHERISHED FOUNTAIN SHRINE.

FINALLY, ONE DARK NIGHT, THE
GROUND STARTED TO SHAKE
AGGRESSIVELY, DURING WHICH THE
SHRINE WAS SWALLOWED BY THE
EARTH. ARBA MINCH WAS RENDERED
AT THE MERCY OF EVIL AGAIN.

THE PEOPLE WERE FOREVER SHUT OFF
FROM THE MYSTICAL SPRING.
THEIR ONCE VIRTUOUS CIVILIZATION
BECAME JUST LIKE ANY HUMAN
SOCIETY, AND THE FOUNTAIN SHRINE
WAS ONLY REFERRED TO IN LEGENDS.

THE AREA WHICH USED TO HARBOUR
THE SHRINE TURNED INTO A DESERT.
A DRY, ARID WILDERNESS WHICH
IN NO WAY REMINDED OF THE LONG
LOST, ONCE SO VIRTUOUS AGES.

WITH THEIR PROSPERITY RAPIDLY
DECLINING, THE PEOPLE OPENED
THEIR SOULS TO ANGER AND SORROW,
THUS ALLOWING EVIL TO GROW IN
THEIR EMBITTERED HEARTS.

SOME WERE AN EASY PREY TO
THE DARKNESS WHICH ALWAYS HAD
SPIED UPON THEM EAGERLY FROM
THE "OTHER SIDE"...

A BIZARRE CULT WAS BORN,
PREACHING SALVATION THROUGH
DESTRUCTION AND THE WORSHIP
OF DEMON KING "GANEL NEGUSE",
THE "TRUE CREATOR OF MAN".

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF EVIL
CREATURES, SUMMONED FROM BEYOND,
THE FOLLOWERS OF GANEL NEGUSE
DEVELOPED A WICKED TASTE FOR
BLOOD.

THEY FELL TO PREYING ON THEIR
FELLOW MEN, AIDED BY THE DARK
VISITORS FROM BEYOND.

EVENTUALLY, THE VAMPIRES AND
THEIR DEMONIC ALLIES WERE DRIVEN
AWAY, BUT THEIR DARK POWERS,
KNOWN AS "T’QUR ASMAT", HAD
NEVER TRULY DISAPPEARED FROM
THIS WORLD.

UNTO THIS DAY,
IT WAS STILL PRACTICED IN
SECRET BY DESPERATE AND
MALEVOLENT SOULS ALIKE...

How about leaving some room for surprise. Wink
I agree! But I hope to have left plenty more to guess and perchance to have risen even more questions. Big smile
