Aspect ratio of graphics mode 1 and multicolor mode

On my MSX both graphics mode 1 (32x24 charblocks) and multicolor mode (64x48 mode) seems to be stretched, I have rather large black bars both above and below, almost like a letterboxed 16:9 mode on a 4:3 TV.
Also it is noticable that the pixels are not square, ie. a block of 16x16 pixels in the multicolor mode is much wider than it is height.
Is this normal, ie. are these modes not supposed to have square pixels? When trying the same thing in emulators, I get square pixels, so either the emulators are wrong or my MSX is strange...

Take a look at this old thread :)

Thanks, I used the program from the linked thread:

10 SCREEN2
20 CIRCLE(128,96),80,15,,,1.19
30 GOTO 30

And on my 14" screen, the circle was squashed a bit (15cm wide and 13cm hight).
So would that put it into abnormal territory?

It's normal. The MSX pretty much fills the screen horizontally but doesn't come close vertically. The pixels aren't square, and there is unused space at the top and bottom, doubly so on a PAL TV. (On MSX2 there is a software hack to increase the size vertically though)
