Of course, the system that you propose would increase competition between developers, and that could be a good thing if we do not start the old MSX tradition of quarreling.

Another option would be to accumulate some money by a given user group and then start an auction. That will also align the games with the final users' preferences.

I'll be really glad to invest 10 euro/month and have a monthly release of a quality game. Anyone else? I guess that a 120 euro/year budget is affordable from my point of view. But make it half if you consider the amount too high: 5 euro/month, 60 euro/year.

Once enrolled, paying a whole year or half of it in advance, the "management group" would accept projects, propose modifications, fix a reasonable deadline with a penalty in case of delay, and let the users vote the games to be produced.

Make some numbers: if 50 users accept, that makes at least 250 euro per project with the lowest fee proposed. I guess we can match those figures. Anyone is willing to start such an initiative?

Nice idea, but the minus side is that people who have paid, may not get games they want.

I mean, let´s say I pay to developers, and I like to get some superior view-behind-the-car MSX-1 racing game which combines best elements from the best 8-bit racing games and also I would like to get some unbelievable colourful MSX-1 platformer or maze game.

Then, most people every time vote for new RPGs and Nemesis/Space Manbow style shooters.

Result: I have paid, and I never get anything I would like to play. oO Me sad. Eek!

More like:

A group or person is going to propose a project, there may be some conceptual artwork already, a plan, and the people may already know the developer(s). After that it's simply like: "who's in?"

"Who's in?"
Now there's the big issue really. I wouldn't be jumping to make myself part of such an arrangement.

I think it's a great idea !

It's like a kind of sponsoringship..but then of a game you think that should be developed. Hell you can even be named in the credits of the game...why not?

by "rewarding" the developers you create a great incentive for them to continue on... I know I like it when people show that they like my work...

It doesn't have to be much but just a little something...

on problem however might be is how to organize such a thing so all parties are satisfied....meaning what if the people who sponsored the game are not satisfied with the level of quality of the game...what to do then?

I think it's probably wise to set some standards to which the developers have to live up to. (example: bleeps and noise instead of real composed music is a BIG no no ! and so on...)

Well, that's in the eye of the beholder. Tongue

As payers are customers, maybe payers could somehow take part in discussion what elements that game can/must have. More brains, more ideas, maybe better game. Smile

But on the other hand, if one´s ideas are not taken into game, some payer(s) may become frustrated? Thought you can´t always get everything. Smile

But it could be nice to pay beforehand to get astonishingly looking MSX-1 and MSX-2 double game (like INK did!Smile) about OUTRUN, which plays PSG and MSX-MUSIC when latter one is inserted. Smile

Btw, I just started this discussion for sake of discussing this issue. I'm not saying someone 'must' eventually do this. The reason why I started it is because it works in the record industry (be it on a small scale compared to the large publishers). An artists has a tune in a showcase, and then thousands of people can invest in a CD from this artist. When an x amount of money is in, the CD will be produced (using the budget for pro recording studios and engineers) and those who've payed their part will receive a CD.

So I was primarily starting this, just to see whether this works @ MSX as well!

I think 99,99% of MSX composers would first require a tracker which can handle both chips using always the same file format.

AFAIK no-one would feel like re-arranging all that stuff manually.
Unless he/she'd get paid a LOT. Smile

no it's not !

composed music is ALWAYS better than a few bleeps blurps and static-radio noise..
