Fudeba, I´m very gratefully with you mesage, at the moment, I´m happy if a MSX1 screen2 version goes on.
I´m not in a hurry, I can wait.
If you play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Astro Marine Corp on MSX (the direct speccy conversions), if has colors and pretty decent movement, I heard no one talking badly about this titles.

Fubeba, Thanks.

If you whant we can make a team to make Turrican conversion.

Let finish your projects and later goes with Turrican.

OK?

@Fudeba
IMHO the conversion has meaning only in screen 4 (and above), using tiles, palette change and 2 colors per line in each character.
Maybe also in screen 2 could work but the artist has to work a lot more...
The most interesting feature of the game was the fast action and the graphic.
The ZX version renounced to the graphic (due to HW limits) keeping the fast action.
Porting that graphic engine to MSX would mean renouncing to both graphic and fast action.
This implies with probability 1 a crappy result.

I somewhat agree with you, and this was the reason I never thought of porting Turrican before.
But maybe the results could be a lot better than I think, even in a straight port... since the game
updates only two thirds of the screen and, since the scroll is 8x8, there is a lot less time
spent on blitting screen ... in comparison with GnG. this is heave (GnG updates almost the
entire screen and has scroll in 2x2 pixels... which I "reduced" to 4x4 on blitting, when frameskip
is enabled.
These differences tell me the game should run at a reasonable speed on 3.57MHz, but fullspeed
- of course - only on 7MHz. The speed can be similar to Astro Marine Corps, as our fellow
Turrican enthusiast said. I just cannot guarantee that, because what I saw in GnG and SimCity
original programming (very confuse, complex and hard to optimize code). Most of time it is
difficult even remove some code "unused on MSX", because the game relies on side effects
of that routine.
This is why GnG runs at 2x2 pixels scroll (on memory), even when frameskip is enabled:
each frame relies upon side effects of the generation of the previous frame.

PS: No smooth scroll needed, provided that the game stay fast.

Hehehe... In my point of view, smooth scroll is completely out, if we talk about a
straight port... and if it is not a straight port, then it will not be my business. Smile

hehehe... Well, they are slower than original versions. Nonetheless, they are superb games,
even on MSX.

It will be nice, although this could take some time. Smile
I am finishing an ancient but cool project.
Anyway, it'll be nice if someone could produce the music. I cannot guarantee it'll
be possible to add it (I believe it is), but this is a great motivation for me.
(I usually program listening the sound track for the game I'm working on)

Wow!! thanks Fudeba. Now its oficial:

TURRICAN TEAM:

For the music, I think first we have to locate some good sound driver that works fine with Turrican.
It can be for FM-Pac+PSG or SCC+PSG.
We better wait until you begin with Turrican and later we can search a musician. I like Wolf, its the best musician, I love the Muzax 2 and 3 songs.
The idea of the game is on cartrige format, if the music is on FMPAC+PSG, the cartrige will be cheaper, if is on SCC+PSG, it will be expensive.
Well, we can chat or mail on GMAIL when the moment arrives.

My plans for 2009 are:
- rush MSXdev'08 (note the word 'rush')
- try not to rush, but we probably rush anyway: PassionMSX2contest (which is still awfully silent tho)

After that we still have Back to the West on the todo, but I think it's more of a code thing when it comes to finishing it. After that we didn't make plans yet apart from us really wanting to do a G9k game, and preferably without a contest pushing us. But apart from this, I may have time for TurricanMSX by then. Dunno what chip to choose. For the moment we only have an PSG/SCCPSG player (the one from Montana John), and I really have to think about about FM-PAC in our current system. Perhaps by then I may have succeeded in making an xdev tracker with which I can control MSX chips via NoWind. Anyway, as TurricanMSX is probably still far away, I'd say: just keep it in mind, and bump me in half a year or so.. Tongue

Not trying to force anything, but an FM soundtrack would be really nice... Big smile

btw, I just found some Turrican vids on youtube, and.. dunno.. I somehow think the music is overrated. Too scene'ish in a way, just like the same differences we hear between scene gamemusic and Japanese gamemusic. But alas, an MSX port can't be without the original music. Tongue In addition, I think the original music can be ported reasonably well to a Microcabin'ish FM/PSG setup.

WOW fantastico!!!!!!
The Microcabin music driver is fantastic, the Fray, Xak 3 and Illusion City soundtrack are some of the best, I like specially the drums and the instruments management.

Dont worry, we will se if the driver fits ok on the conversion, I think it will work.

I like very much the Turrican 1 music from Amiga computer, its special, maibe not japanese style but Chris Huelsbeck has the more japan videogame musical style of all the amiga musicians.

Take a look:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VkSw-bJ29g&feature=related

And some other music from him:

(take a look from 1:15:D)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3gIjMm2P-g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B_U7uyXaSI&feature=related

The Amiga Turrican has some levels without music, I think Wolf can do new themes there and it will be more complete.
With Wolf´s musical talent the game will be much better.
