If only I could directly click through to the latest post if I get a notification mail that a new post was made in this topic...
Note that after clicking, the site is half Dutch half English.... Screenshot available via IRC.
@manuel - actually that will also be tackled by the update we are planning. Please be patient, it's worth the wait!
(well, at least I think it is)
Either way, a small update was placed on MSX Resource Center just now. Today, we detected a massive increase of fake user account registrations and attempts to spam our comments/fora. To give you an indication of what we're talking about, it's not a spam message or two, but several hundreds of messages within a 12 hour timeframe. And a multitude of accounts.
Now you probably have not noticed anything about this as we have found quite a nifty way to prevent spam from showing up on the website these days, but nevertheless it was time to take measures. Especially since all our members can also contact other members via contact forms and we don't want that feature to be abused by spammers.
So from now on, new users will have to prove they are human by playing a simple game - a service provided by areyouahuman.com. As many bots have already registered an account on MRC the only way to block the already existing accounts is to also require this human-verification during the login process. So for the time being (while we find a way to nicely clean up our user database) you will be asked to play a little game every time you login on MRC.
(Unless you connect with Facebook, that is).
Sorry for any inconvenience, I hope for your understanding! -- and perhaps you even enjoy those silly games. Ahwell... :RNFF:
Is the "be a human" Thing a Virus?
I posted somewhere else, because first time even after logging in things not work.
@hit9918 - not a virus, but a modern CAPTCHA. Read above. I did quite some cleaning up already, so I'll lift the "are you human" validator from the login process. So the only point where you have to play this game is when registering a new account. Sounds reasonable, no?
okay, after the virus shock, I see the human thing is mentioned here.
My story of 15 minutes not logging in:
I press cursor keys for game (looks like I am an MSX man...)
and I see the background underneath scrolling along with cursor keys,
conclusion: browser focus fail.
Try other browser. Same thing.
I press disability button. What goes on there is a joke. Try other browser, same joke.
aha, need to drag that thing (I am not a flash gamer).
once suceeding the game, clicking this topic, again not logged in, bug,
then write some panic message somewhere else.
@snout, means I made it thru fovever? phew
As far as I remember I suceeded this game 3 times in 2 browsers, i.e. had to go 3 times thru it.
I can understand your frustration, but I hope you understand that we need to protect our website against spam and user contact-form abuse. Again, to give an indication of the crapstorm that was going on: about 30.000 to 40.000 accounts were registered within a very short timespan. Something had to be done. Immediately.
Then you being denied after finishing the game. That's not a bug either, although it should be handled better. Not only finishing the game, but also the way you play the game is an important factor in determining whether you are human or not. The result can be inconclusive, after which you should have to play another game. I'll try and make that more clear, but that's not my highest priority right now - especially since the login restriction has been lifted (for) now.
Right now, we're further cleaning up the MRC userbase and monitoring any suspicious activity. During this it might be necessary to put this login restriction back into place. Please bear with us and know that this is only a temporary measure to make sure our valued members don't get buried under a mountain of spam via the MRC.
The areyouhuman site could need a page where humans can spam their frustration (without needing to pass the applet).
As is, stressed admins get the feedback instead of the maker of the applet.
rather that than the horrible captcha, though. I always misread them ...
uhm no, I'm not a bot.
I also think it's an improvement over regular captcha's, albeit a bit over-the-top.
