There's a (minor) bug with animated GIFs that are optimized (so that only the part of the image that has changed will be updated by combining frames). It looks like the scaler assumes the dimensions do not change (which may happen), or something.
I tried to load one as a profile picture. Not that it mattes storage-wise in this case, the file size will drop from 1062 bytes to 651 bytes. 
But just though someone might want to know.
So that’s why I momentarily got that bad gateway error yesterday evening .
