*** The post below is an April Fools joke, although one never knows what the future might bring... ***

The Oculus Rift seems to become the next best thing since sliced bread, with Facebook recently acquiring the company behind it for the small sum of 2 billion US Dollars.

An MSX Emulator for this virtual reality goggle is already in the making. The emulator, based on openMSX, relies on separate patches that optimize existing MSX games for a new VR Experience. One of the first games to receive a patch is Konami's Q-bert.

Although it's that data again, the idea is nifty. Playing old MSX games with this device would rock! Smile

Check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6d3fUHZfOo for some inspiration of how this could actually work.

based on openMSX? tsk, the only emulator that would dare to add a weird feature like that is Audrey Tautou's meisei, space !

On a serious note, I did think about it in the past, putting each 'layer' of sprites on its own Z level and then making a cross-eye or parallel 3D effect with 2 windows. It would look really weird. Tongue
Also, I would change pixels into voxels and allow a custom camera perspective.

you can test it with red-cyan glasses Wink

if you're going to use voxels perhaps name it "meicraft mode" Tongue

The only way to make it appear 3d is to put the sprites in the foreground... we already talked in #openMSX about doing this one day... but we never really experimented with it.

The idea of that snes emulator is not making the games look 3d, but to play them in a virtual environment. An arcade or 1980s themed room might add to the experience. As for MSX, theoretically different types of MSX computers can be shown, depending on which it is emulated. I can see how this would add to the experience, but to me it would be nothing more than a gimmick.

..still a cool gimmick. Imagine a 3D model of the Dokzaal with all kinds of MSX computers viewable and playable with the Rift Wink

Re-experience the atmosphere of the old Tilburg and Zandvoort MSX computer fairs!

That’d be something ;p.

Actually I've done that on real MSX tR by using shutter glasses and MSX2+ scroll register. Works pretty ok as long as game has enough colorfull backround... Ie new Operation Wolf works pretty nicely.
