Here is another idea: what if you swap magnified and non-magnified sprites each frame? This way you could have both big and small sized sprites on screen at the same time.

My only concern would be about too much flickering...

Frame-to-frame seems unlikely to give satisfactory results indeed.
Perhaps you could do line-by-line switching, having large sprites on all even and small sprites on all odd lines. Meaning you'll have to do a screensplit on every line and not only switch sprite size but also sprite banks (to alternate visibility of the two sets). Might give a acceptable raster effect but seems hardly doable for something other than a tech demo.

How many 1980s computer games there may have been which could be considered as a great tech demo (and very playable too!) ? Wink
