No rage. I just tried some function keys to see what would happen. Found out the muting with F1, and couldn't get it unmuted (appeared later that it takes a few seconds before it starts playing). Then I got confused as it starts playing again automatically in some conditions (when you lose a life). So anyway, I tried more keys etc. It was a fuzzy process Tongue

I tried one I once got from a cd and one I used to have on my real MSX. And on openMSX I also use the tape image from the cassette archive.

Looks like I'm missing the one completely at the top... but I couldn't get Monty in there... will try again.

Yes, trying the function keys (+others) isn't a bad idea most times... (but I can't name any other game that has a key for volume control?) (but cool/handy you can turn it down when starting to get annoyed.. Wink)

Well, got a few levels further. But it's a weird game. Especially the game mechanics. Your horizontal move is very quick and vertical is quite slow. And the acceleration is quite... annoying. And if you move horizontally, you can drop down vertically, although there's no real gravity. Odd game.

Yes, it's a bit like you're floating.. Part of the gameplay I reckon Smile
Yes, it's a bit weird, and if you haven't played it back in the day I reckon it's not really a game one picks up. But it *does* fit in (UK) MSX 'cult' IMO Smile

I find it interesting that it seems to have some things in common with other UK MSX games from that time (the room/stage descriptions at the bottom, the monty's left in the bottom-left corner, uses 'Monty' as the main character's name / part of the game title...) (Perhaps interesting to some: 'Monty' is a short form of 'Montgomery' (I never really realized that myself.. Smile))

Yes, it looks like it borrowed some concepts (or jumped on the hype) from games like Manic Minder and Jet Set Willy.

Yes, I looked up some stuff already.. Smile

According to Moby Games, Manic Miner is from 1983, this one & JSW from 1984, and the first 'other' Monty game (Wanted: Monty Mole) also from 1984.. :)

Is Mutant Monty related to the Monty Mole games? I don't think they are... (different software house)

No, I reckon not. They only share the 'Monty' name/title.. (but I do find that an interesting fact though; pure coincidence, or..?)

EDIT: perhaps, just guessing here, and perhaps over-thinking this Wink, they could also have chosen the name 'Monty' based on (the success of) Monty Python.. I feel there are some resemblances, like the purple foot enemies (see screenshot @genmsx), and the weird hand/arm when you game over.. I find that to be a bit Monty Pythonesque (though I'm certainly not a connoisseur or particular fan of the series/films.. Wink)

I wouldn't be surprised if they indeed were inspired by the Monty Python hype of that time Smile The companies doing this being British makes it even more likely ;-)
