Interesting! i read somewhere that Scart is better than American video ports, i was going to assume that it would decrease at least a little.

No region locks. I once read there exsist some games that refuse to start on european MSX but they are extremely rare.

There's only one major region lock: the Japanese version of Metal Gear (1), it can only be runned on a Japanese or Korean machine.

There are also
- some Brazilian games on disk that require a disk drive with I/O port access (Microsol or similar)
- a few Korean games that require a Korean machine
- many Arabic games (mostly educational) that require an Arabic machine

There are a number of region locked games. E.g. the PAL version of Metal Gear doesn't work on a Japanese MSX and vice versa. Most games are completely region free though.

On a side note: even if you already own Metal Gear on NES/Famicom, you may still want to play the MSX version. It's the original one and it's objectively the superior version. If you don't feel like forking out the kind of money people want for it nowadays (understandable), get Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on PS2 or any of the compilations on PS3/PSVita/... that include that game. It has emulated versions on a separate disc of both Metal Gear and a localized version of Metal Gear 2. The NES version is just... meh. Even Kojima called it 'kusoge'.

Also many MSX ports of games have unique features that you won't find on other systems. E.g. Salamander (aka Life Force), Contra or Vampire Killer (Castlevania) play quite differently from their NES namesakes. And in Ganbare Goemon (aka Mystical Ninja in the US) for example there are 2 playable characters in the MSX release. The first Final Fantasy on MSX has completely rearranged music and a somewhat different colour palette compared to other versions. So don't necessarily assume that you "know" these games already.

The biggest exclusive is probably Space Manbow. It was only ported to the Japanese Wii Virtual Console and to some mobile phone format at some point. Very pricey game though.

About the MegaflashROM SCC+ SD
Pick the one with a 512kB MainRAM expansion to be sure you can use your SD card more efficiently.
Be sure to have an MSX2.
From all the MSXes I've seen (and really, that's not a lot) Philipses have their RGB output goes with a SCART plug. The Sony and Panasonic devices I've seen all have this typical DIN connector for RGB.

You could try and use a C64 1084 screen as monitor... They accept RGB on their SCART input...

SCART carries an RGB signal which gives the best image quality, far superior to composite video and also better than S-Video. Also RGB monitors and TVs often don’t care about 50 Hz (PAL) or 60 Hz (NTSC) which is good for playing Japanese games. Most if not all MSX2 and higher computers have RGB output (SCART for European computers, DIN plugs for Japanese). It’s meant for TVs and RGB monitors though, to connect to a VGA monitor you need a scandoubler. I connect via the SCART input on my TV, but outside of Europe those are not so easy to find I think.

On games, I can really recommend Metal Gear 2 for MSX, it’s a fantastic game and was not released on any other system (well, not counting MGS3 Subsistence for PS2). I’m also a big fan of the Japanese RPGs for MSX, SD Snatcher, Ys, Xak, Fray, Dragon Slayer 6, etc.

To be exact: no, it's exactly how mars2000you put it. Only the Japanese MG has it. The European game runs fine on Japanese MSX'es.

Anyway, to the original poster: you could of course buy all these original games, but you can also use the MegaFlashROM to just flash ROM games and run them without owning the original game. (Legal consequences are your own responsibility, of course.) Regarding the 8235: as said before, the only issue is that it's single sided, so most Japanese MSX2 disk games (and there are many good ones) won't run on it. But the MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD has disk emulation too and with the SD card you can easily copy files from PC to MSX... so with that and your 8235 you only miss FM sound (which most good Japanese MSX2 disk games and most European MSX2 games support).

Also, you can of course try out any hardware or software you might want to buy in an emulator, as long it's emulated (and a lot is).

Alright, so sadly it looks like i wont go with that 8235 since its not leaning towards most japanese games, Which Company should i go with then? specifically for japanese games

I see. I assumed it worked both ways. Found out "the hard way" when I got a Japanese copy of the game that didn't work on my Euro MSX. I have a Japanese MSX now too though. Wink (And a European copy of Metal Gear, but I hadn't really tested it on my Japanese MSX since I assumed it wouldn't work anyway.)

As was said before, if you take any other Philips MSX2 (8245, 8250, 8255 or 8280) you should be fine when it comes to Japanese games on floppy disk. These are all intended for the European market though. So: 220V, and typically a SCART output port rather than a DIN connector.

Otherwise there are many different companies to choose from: Sony, Sanyo, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, National, Toshiba, ... Most of them have different models too.
