Also you can get an 8235 where the disk drive has been replaced by a double sided one, Bas sells them probably. So if you have a particular fondness for the model, it’s a nice machine Smile. Also with a MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD, maybe you won’t need to use the disk drive so much. When I was in high school I had an 8235, later I got an 8245. There’s many nice Japanese models too though, I’ve got an expensive turboR GT now but there’s several Panasonic, Yamaha, Sony and Sanyo models that I like too…

Not really much difference in general on the most important features that matter for playing games. Japanese machines generally had less RAM but 64K is usually enough for Japanese titles and it can always be extended (e.g. with the MegaFlashROM’s 512K RAM option). Because the European MSX2 machines typically had 128K, late European titles sometimes use more than 64K.

Of course there are differences per machine because the manufacturers tried to distinguish themselves in one way or another, but in the end they’re all MSX standard computers so the base capabilities are the same. E.g. some have superimposing/digitising functions, others have two disk drives, some have a turbo mode (not used by most software though), some have Basic-kun built in, some have a MSX-Music sound chip, some MIDI, some even have modems or printers built-in.

So making a choice is mostly about what is available at what cost, and whether you like the looks of the machine and whether you have any interest in a particular extra feature.

(That list is a nice start btw but not complete, e.g. the Yamaha CX7M is missing which I’m personally quite fond of -I have the CX5MII which is its MSX1 predecessor-, though it’s not so easy to find I think.)

Btw, also check the msx.org wiki which recently had a lot of MSX models added thanks to mars2000you:

Category:MSX1
Category:MSX2
Category:MSX2+
Category:MSX turbo-R

Japanese machines are not super cheap in general, but if you’re looking for one maybe an MSX2+ is a good choice, I don’t think they are much more expensive than MSX2’s (correct me if I’m wrong) and there are some nice models. But I also like the Sony HB-F1, which appeared in Phantom Pain :).

Note that there’s not much MSX2+ software so you won’t be missing out on much if you decide to go for an MSX2, so that + doesn’t need to be the deciding factor :).

Yes.

(I’m sure someone will post a response saying that there is some exception, but the simple answer is yes, they were made to be backwards compatible and MSX2+ was a minor upgrade anyway.)

sweet! i was looking at this MSX http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSX-Sony-HB-10-Console-LODE-RUNNER-J... Sadly so far this is the cheapest computer i have found so far, and i only say sadly because you all keep recommending a MSX2. i was not digging sonys design with other computers but i actually kinda like the look of this one!

Just for the record, I think Bas sells Philips MSX2 computers for around €50-€100, so that may also be an avenue worth exploring. He’s a reputable seller. Also daniel683104 sells Japanese MSX2, 2+ and turboR machines on this forum but they’re usually in the €200+ range. Both of them refurbish the machines and make sure they’re in good condition.

There are many great games for MSX1 like Gradius 2, Salamander, King’s Valley II, Maze of Galious, Eggerland, Fantasm Soldier, H.E.R.O., Dota, Elite, etc. But you can’t play most of the RPGs on it, Metal Gear, Usas, Space Manbow, Psycho World, Aleste 2, etc. So it definitely limits the software titles you can play. Personally my favourite games are MSX2 titles. Lots of fun 21st century scene releases are for MSX1 though.
