*I searched the forums for several days for an answer to this topic but couldn't find anything satisfactory*

First of all greetings! I acquired my Sony MSX2+ around five years ago w/ a MFR and have enjoyed it greatly. I'm not hugely technically gifted so booting anything other than cart-based ROMS and single-disk files causes me troubles. I know that DSK files need to be renamed to FD1, FD2, etc. is basically what's required to get the process rolling for multi-disk games, but how/where do I edit them? I tried on my PC but I can't change extensions to "FDx", and the (E)dit function within the ROM browser on the MSX itself yielded no results. So my question is how do I get say, "Aleste2.DSK" changed to, "Aleste2.FD1"?

My MSX is going to be in a museum at an upcoming convention next month with Aleste 2 on-hand to play by attendees. We ran Space Manbow and Goonies in previous years and as those were cart-based games it wasn't an issue using the MegaFlashROM. But this year I'm in a crunch to get this figured out. Any help please? Smile

Thank you! I really like your community here.

in multi mente you can press the button which belongs to the (re)name command. It's printed in top. I forgot, but I guess it's the N of Name. On the DOS prompt, or better said Nextor prompt, you can type REN FILENAME.DSK FILENAME.FD2. Ofcourse this depends on the name of the DSK file.
You can leave 1 disk DSK files as is.

Also on pc it should be no problem to rename. what went wrong when you tried? Ah, I suppose you were on Windows and have the annoying default setting still enabled that it doesn't show the extension in Explorer...

Okay I have the extensions changed thank you! Now after changing to, "Alesta2.fd1, Aleste2.fd2, and Aleste2.fd3" I pressed Return and it only loaded one of the disks. All filenames were identical as I put them in exactly as I typed them here.

After getting to the end of Disk 1 of Aleste 2 I got no further. What am I doing wrong???

Is it possible that I have a bad ROM? I'll go through the anime intro and get to the title screen of Aleste 2. I then press a button on my controller and some cool digitized speech happens, then I get a black screen with a few Japanese words displayed. The only thing I can read on this screen is the English letter "A". If I push a button here a few short Japanese words appear below the text above and the game won't go any further. Is it asking for another disk I wonder? This same exact situation happened to me before I edited the filenames and extensions. It's beginning to aggravate lol.

That's why the extension of multiple disk games are not DSK but FDx. So Multi Mente knows to flash FD1 files to virtual drive 1 FD2 to virtual drive 2 and so on. Otherwise they'd all be flash over each other.
So once you flashed 3 FDx files you'll have all of them sequantially flashed on your flashrom with demo being disk 1, game disk 1 being disk 2 and game disk 2 being disk 3.
If you keep the number of the desired disk pressed while pressing space when the game asks for a disk change, that disk will be selected.

So your game disk 1 will probably be aleste2.fd2. When the game asks for that disk, keep 2 pressed while you press spacebar.

Hi Mati, so it is asking you to insert the next disk, you do this by pressing 2 whilst you push spacebar (or 3 if lateron it asks for another disk). Sometimes it will be unclear from the Japanese prompt which disk to insert (it could ask for program disk or user disk or whatever). You can try the different disks then (first 2, then 3) until it accepts one. The important part is to press the number key and space together at the same time!
