I've just beaten #*!@# Nemesis 2 this evening. Took me 5 hours straight of intense nerve wrecking action to beat it on my AX170 without using secondary cartridges or cheats. Only countless deaths in every way possible.
I'm a different human being now.. I also finished Nemesis 1 not too long ago, but Nemesis 1 was children play compared to this damned thing. As a game dev myself, I can never be this cruel to players. The design is both amazing and a piece of art, but also terribly unfair in several sections. Of course this very unfairness is what makes beating the game feel such an achievement. Boy what a ride...

Wow!

You are my hero. I have never been able to defeat any Nemesis without cheating. I also think they are very hard to defeat, maybe that's why they created cheat codes Wink

Congratulations!

Very impressive!
I owned this game as a teenager and played it quite a lot, but never finished it back on those days. After I thought I made it and I had to find out I had to fly back, I switched off my trusty Toshiba HX-10 out of frustration.
At a later age I did finish it, with the help of cheats though. But man... I was impressed with the game and it's SCC music.

Anyway.. congratulations! I can imagine life will never be the same now!

Salamander is even more difficult! Konami's Nemesis series... all of the games are true pieces of art.

I do remember finishing Nemesis 2 back in the day running a program in Basic published in MSX-Club (Spanish MSX magazine) that simulated Game Master 2. You had to insert the original Nemesis 2 cartridge with the computer switched on! Never had a problem fortunately.

...and the cartridge was not even mine! (Borrowed from a classmate while I was in high school in the early nineties).

Thanks guys! My next stop is Salamander now. Zanac series will follow after the Nemesis series...
Notable things in Nemesis 2:

  • Enemies scale the ferociousness of their attacks according to your current armament situation. Never seen a game do that before. Keeps the game tough even if you get ridiculously upgraded.
  • In the Game Over screen, under your Hi Score there is another number below it that I couldn't understand what is it for. Any ideas?
  • Upgrading your fighter is a bad idea if you plan to die. The extra power slots will push away your chances of reclaiming Options and the Force Field. I won the game by just taking Up Laser because it's essential IMO. The rest can be ignored. I'd say a full ship upgrade is only for the brave who plan to win the whole game without deaths.
  • As Dolphin mentioned, laser isn't the go to weapon here like in Salamander. The normal beam is the answer for most levels except the living tissue level.
  • I love all the Metallica references Tongue

Now off to Salamander, this time with Nemesis 2 in the second slot...

The number under the score is a checksum of the score. If you took a picture of your high score, you could win a price. The checksum was used to prevent people from cheating.

BTW, I'd love to see a list of the Metallica references.

@TheKid I thought story-line wise Salamander happens between Nemesis 2 and Nemesis 3, no?
@wimpie3 Thanks for the info! Makes sense to hold contests over such a challenging game.

The Metallica references start with the ship's name and pilot. "James Burton" flying the "Metalion", as appointed by emperor "Lars"! Interestingly no mention of Kirk nor Dave, and I guess this was after Cliff Burton RIP but before Jason appeared in place? Otherwise the pilot's name would've probably been "James Newsted" Tongue
