Ok. Never watched them that close, but you're right.
I've exchanged them without problems during my swap-against-beltless-drive-period.

The controller is a chip on the mainboard.

Yeah, I know. But since both boards have the same controller, that should mean either drive will work in either system, since the controller is how the system communicates with the drive.

Anyway, if you've swapped them before, then that's all I need to know! Thanks for the info, both of you. Those drives look VERY different from one another, actually, so it stands to reason their behavior would be a little different. I suspect maybe the one used in the ST was slightly cheaper to produce, so even though it's less powerful/not as good as the one in the WX, that's the one Panasonic went with in order to afford the other components and keep costs low.

That's just my theory, anyway. Wink

The drives are functionally identical. I have two STs, WX and WSX, and swapped the drives when I needed. They worked fine. The differences are irrelevant in this case, unless someone is planning to mod/fix the drive.
