But, is it the same as the one used for the Arkanoid games? It seems a clone anyway (by Hotbit).

They're assuming an Arkanoid pad, they're not playable with a standard joystick.

What are you talking about?

I played my Arkanoid with standard atari type joystick over twenty years ago... Smile

Maybe there´s some code difference between EUROPEAN cassette release and japanese original cartridge?

hap of the past meant the cartridge releases that included the Arkanoid controller, and those are unplayable with joystick.

Has anyone built a paddle to work with Arkanoid on a real MSX? I've started on building this (a potentiometer + a microcontroller).

Just to check, I've run Arkanoid 1 on my MSX (loadrom). This version does not work with a joypad, so do you think this one is compatible with the paddle?

If pressing the button on the paddle starts the game, that is pin 2 on the joystick port 1 (PSG port A r#14 bit 1). For a quick test, I thought that would be the same as pressing down on the joypad, but that didn't start the game. May be there are some other checks to see if a paddle is connected to the MSX.

If the range is like that (164 is far left, 236 is middle, 309 is far right), that is only 145 wide, so using 9 bits seems wasting. May be Taito just re-used the NES paddle or whatever was the original to work with MSX?

Yes, the cartridge version only works with the paddle (and keyboard), pressing DOWN on a joystick should start the game. I agree Taito probably used the same design as their Famicom/NES Arkanoid pad.

Reading this old topic, I was wondering if it is possible to rewire the Famicom version of the paddle to use it on a MSX.

Stumbled on this topic as I was researching on MSX Paddle. Was there ever an MSX Compatible paddle sold (since it's supported by the MSX Basic)? The only paddle I ever saw was the Arkanoid one...

Is the Paddle protocol and pinout compatible with any other computer's (Atari or so?)

Well, maybe someone can try and see if his Atari 2600 paddle controller works on an MSX as Arkanoid paddle...

Yes as Arkanoid Paddle or with the Basic PDL() command
