Hi all,i am about to receive a philips 8235 msx 2 model, and after reading some accounts here, the comp apparently has batteries inside,im not familiar with the msx technology,so i am wondering would be safe to remove these batteries to prevent any leakage or do the batteries serve any purpose?

Yes, it is safe to remove the battery as it only mantais the calendar and some customizable parameters as the prompt, the beep sound and the screen center or the password...
Just check the board for some AA-type Ni-Cd, and unsolder it or replace it for a working one. But ensure it is really blown, because my HB F9S is using the original one nowadays... and it's working 100%.

You can leave them if they are still in use, and they charge volts enough to mantain the parameters (you know: the clock, calendar, and blah-blah-blah) from week to week... if not (you lost the custom information each time the MSX is power-off), you can take it out. The computer will be 100% working, but no date, no clock, no custom "beep"...
My NMS 8280 has a bad battery inside... but I'm too lazy to replace it... maybe tomorrow... Tongue

Best wishes.

Just if you have a Gouda SCSI the ID parameters are saving into the clock memory

I suppose for typical MSX owners a 'goldcap' (a sort of 'super-capacitor' with value of ~0.1F up to a few Farad, typical specced for 5.5V volt) could be a nice replacement. Small size, charge in a few minutes on power-up, keeps charge long enough to survive MSX powered off for an hour or so, no worries about leakage when the machine sits unused in a box for years...

Has anyone tried these already for clockchip backup in an MSX Question
Results?
