Hello, for now i could made some updates to the HB-F5, roms to MSX2+, VDP to V9958, Z80 CPU 8Mhz, redirect internal RAM from SLOT 0-X to SLOT 3-X, also planning to install 512K SRAM external memory mapper LPE-512KBSRAM-V3 into MSX like expanded to future free use of SLOT1&SLOT2, L.Padial told me that this SRAM memory mapper supports 8Mhz OK or more; but first i´ll prefer to install the MSX SUPER TURBO because once placed the memory mapper into the MSX probably could hinder the location and installation of MSX SUPER TURBO. Ok, based on the installation made in the HB-F9S I have begun to locate points on the hb-f5 possibly related to the MSX SUPER TURBO installation, the HB-F5 has no service manual, i had to make this searching testing point by point into HB-F5 motherboard, for now i get this info:

Regards.
Thanks a lot for help.

You'd need a number of different clocks here:

  • Switched 3.58 Mhz / turbo frequency that should go to Z80, cartridge slots and CX23044 (for DRAM signal timing).
  • Fixed 3.58 MHz for use by video encoding circuitry (and input to /2 divider in CX23045).
  • Half that (from CX23045?) to feed to YM2149 PSG.

And no schematic other than block diagram of CX23044/45 in the Sony HB-101/201 service manual. Looks like you'd have your work cut out here... Wink FWIW: with no schematic and no way to check the machine myself, I don't think I'll help you here - good luck... Evil Why exactly would you want to expand a rare/collector machine like this with everything & the kitchen sink, again? Question

Hello, Retrotechie, well, about HB-F5 updates I wondered myself if i´ll do some mods or not, in the end I decided it was better to make some changes on it because I will not sell this HB-F5 even being rare msx and probably some MSX collectors might be interested on it, but i prefered to update everything all I can and then get with this the best performance in games, with 64K of RAM for example is little that I can do talking in game and after seeing the results with the MSX SUPER TURBO in hb-F9S gives me the impression that now without MSX SUPER TURBO something important is missing into the MSX performance, talking in gaming, it is clear that even if I can install the turbo on this msx I´ll no abuse it , for that i can use the HB-F9S, but even so I prefer to install the mods to have the best compatibility in games. Also tell that i have 4 more MSX SUPER TURBO minipcb boards and material to install this one for the HB-F5, only i have 4 diodes not 6, anyways is also a way to to harness the excess material that I have been in the HB-F9S, and the most important thing, learn more things about msx hardware. Well i think there is no special reason to do the mods, perhaps the most important is to have all the support possible.

I´m trying to find a Japanese Msx user that can give me some information on the hb-f5, if there is a manual, if anyone have it scanned, or information about this, but I have very complicated to find something. It´s the hard part, try to search for the HB-F5 manual... I think this will be impossible quest.

OK, about what you've said, i made a new diagram, i dont know if this is exactly that you told me, because i´m a little confuse, anyways this is...

Again, thanks a lot for all the help.

Hello, i tried above diagram, and the Msx Super Turbo works, but i found some problems, i tried first the install with Diode to Ground (3.58Mhz) and no problem in boot, then i install a 6Mhz crystal, when Turbo is ON i found this problems:

-Speed increased OK but sound have problems, distorsionated even with game that uses SCC working from cart (in Hb-F9s the SCC games sounded OK). Sound seems that will be fixed someway, the YM2149 is conected like the diagram above shows, to CX23045 PIN27=HCLK, this wire is original from mainboard, i´m wonder if the YM2149 pin 22=CLK will be cutted from HCLK in CX23045 and feed directly to 3.58Mhz...

-The Msx hang in boot with 64K, probably this is normal with DRAM, with 512K memory mapper in SLOT2 works ok.

-Characters strange are show in MSXDOS-2 even if i conect the IORQ signal (Z80 pin20) to diode, this also happened in HB-F9s but conect the IORQ signal fixed that problem.

- If the IORQ signal is not conected when Turbo is OFF no problems, but when TURBO is ON, some glitches appear in screen, and also problems with sound.

I´m trying to find a way to fix that problems, please i need some help.

After trying some experiments with the Msx Super Turbo i decided stop the mod because i cant make it this works perfect, i prefer to stop now before f..k some part of the HB-F5, i follow a lot of tracks and tried a new way, after that i get black screen and at the same time the Msx Super Turbo led was ON in both switch positions, i rebuild all cutted tracks in the HB-F5 and i removed the Msx Super Turbo circuit, the HB-F5 works again perfect.
