Hi

I'm new to the msx scene. I've just bought two Toshiba HX-10's, but I'm having a few problems loading any games from cassette.

I have connected the computer to a cassette recorder using the cassette lead, with the ear, mic and rem jacks all in the correct sockets. When I imput the commands to load the game and press play the cassette does not play.

Any ideas what the fault/problerm may be?

thanks!

or "bload"cas:",r

does the casseteplayer run when you press "play"?

(you might have to unplug the jacks to make it work)

To test it, you should plug only the EAR jack. Then type load"cas:",r and turn the volume in the TV to the max. The volume in the cassete should be at 80-90%

If the cable is correct, you should hear the sound in the TV speaker (though very weak).

The sound is something like PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPOP PEEEEEEEEEEEEEPOEPROPERTPEROPEOPOTREPOWPEROT.....

In the first "POP", under the LOAD command must appear FOUND:YYYYY.
YYYYY is the name of the game/program.

If nothing appears, then press CTRL-STOP and change the LOAD command with BLOAD->BLOAD"CAS:",r
REWIND and repeat the operation.
If nothing appears, repeat with CLOAD. This is only for BASIC PROGRAMS. In this case you can only type CLOAD, without "cas:"

If you can't get the FOUND, you can try to adjust the azimut in the cassete. This is a little screw in the head of the cassete. Without the EAR jack, at a reasonable volume (hearing directly the sound from the cassete), turn slowly the screw until the sound is as sharp as possible.

Then repeat all the operation.

Good luck.

If you mean that cassette player DOESN´T WORK AT ALL = tape won´t move at all (after you have properly typed loading command and pressed RETURN and then pressed PLAY on the cassette recorder) then I ask to check if your cassette player has removable power cable. If so, it might be possible, that as it is most probably used cassette player, that power cable may not stay tightly in it´s place in cassette player, I mean, that it may get loose, you may not notice it otherwise, but cassette player will not get any power. You might try another same type power cable. Or another cassette player, if you have another. Any cassette player will do, as long as there are at least place for white cassette cable (White is for loading, Black controls cassette player motor (not necessarily needed, but without it, the tape won´t stop, when loading ends), Red is for saving).

Does that cassette player run when you try it WITHOUT msx? (=without any cassette cables)

Maybe your old MSX cassette lead is faulty too?

By the way, if tape runs, then if your cassette player has TREBLE knob, you may try to adjust it to proper level.

Hi

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. It's still not working!

I've checked the cassette player and it seems to work fine on it's own i.e. with the msx lead unplugged the tape runs, I can hear the loading sound and I've adjusted the azimut to get the clearest sound.

Maybe I should buy another msx cassette lead?

Any more advice gratefully received?

I tried this, no joy. The cassette does play with the leads unplugged.

I tried this and i was able to get the found command to appear. Does this mean the cable is ok?

Thanks

Update:

If I plug in just the ear and mic lead, and unplug rem, the tape runs, and after typing the loading instruction bload"ce",r the line Skip:CE appears, but the game fails to load. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Update 2:

I tried a different game and can get the Found message to appear with just the ear and mic leads. The tape runs if I unplug the rem and press play manually. I now get a syntax error after a while, which leads me to think the cable is fine, but maybe the old cassette or cassette player are not giving a clear enough signal to load the game?
