It's finally here!!! An MSX Emulator ported to the iPhone.

But that's not all. All the people who DO play games on their iPhones know that when it comes to gameplay the on screen controls are terrible. We D E S P E R AT E L Y need a D-Pad for our iPhones!!

I've been trackin the iCP (icontrolpad) since august 2010 and right now I am a happy iCP-owner : )
If you cannot hold your horses, here's the site: www.icontrolpad.com and check it out.
But I'll post some more down below, after:

The MSX Emu.

Meet Rakashazi! A genious who already ported nes, snes, pce, gba to the iPhone and now MSX as well.

Here's a quick movie he made of the MSX.emu playin Doki Doki, Aleste with FM-pack support, Hydlide III and Space Manbow with SCC support.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=_upcK1Xq3Uc&feature=player_embedded

The emu is based on BlueMSX because...well uhm..I asked him too. So don't hate me if you'd rather seen another MSX emu ported.
I've been feedin Rakashazi with intel on what was nesaccary to make a good port to the iPhone. It did need support for a two-button joystick at first. Later he will add in more keys, maybe with a shift-option. Games like SD Snatcher and Metal Gear do need those.

The MSX.emu is still under development, though you can see, games are already able to be played. Rakashazi is workin on the support for the iControlpad and better on screen controls.

The MSX.emu will be released on cydia. So you DO need a jailbroken iPhone.

And here's the catch. I'm postin this, because Rakashazi relies on donations. So yes, I'm fundraisin, but only because I too really need a good MSX emulator for my iPhone just as a lot of you guys do too. Can't live without my MSX!!!!

You've got to understand there are a lot more platforms waitin to be ported, like PSX. I'm just glad I could convince Rakashazi to port a MSX emulator straight from the beginning. ZODTTD hasn't got the time to do this, since he's way to busy.

So that's why I wanted to announce the followin:
If you would make a donation of $20 (around 13 euro's) you will get a copy of the MSX.emu when it's released. Of course you can still buy it from cydia when it's released.

Rakashazi's site:
http://www.explusalpha.com/home

By the way, check out his snes9x_EX emu. It's free and on cydia as well. Donations are welcome of course LOL!

Now for the iControlpad:

i25.photobucket.com/albums/c95/kaziebo/icpmain.jpg

The iCP is made by the same producers as the Pandora. The iCP is a Bluetooth controller with:
- a digital D-Pad
- 2 Analogue nubs
- 6 face buttons and 2 rear buttons
- a clever side clamp system allowing it to attach to almost any phone (including android phones)

Here's a good video explainin the history of the iCP and the puttin together the iCP with an iPhone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCGe1WzNRZ8&feature=related

The iCP should 'just work' on any Android app which supports a PC gamepad out of the box.
iPhone users should have jailbreak but does work on unbroken iPhone in keyboard mode.
It has an internal 1350maH battery that can also charge your phone via USB when playing.
Upgradeable firmware, new features can be added, restrictions can be bypassed.

There's an almost complete wiki on the iCP with most questions you'll have answered:
http://pandorawiki.org/IControlPad

The iCP's don't come cheap, due to the internal battery as well as the BT-chip.
The iCP I ordered and got send to the Netherlands from the UK did had a total of 84,- euro's. (55,- for the iCP, the rest VAT and shippin)
There are some video's on youtube of people who do have problems with the iCP. I recommend you check out the forum where all issue's are discussed:
http://boards.openpandora.org/index.php?/forum/6-icontrolpad/

Well good luck checkin all of this and I'll read the comments and try to answer all questions you guys/girls might have!!

Just a quick note about your 'reserved' post: that won't work on this forum, since editing will be disabled after a certain amount of minutes. ;-)

As for the finished project, I'm not sure if the license (GPL iirc) of BlueMSX allows for it to be released commercially?

Ok thanks : )

GPL:
I've checked the GPL Licence on the GNU website.
www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesTheGPLAllowMoney

It's completely legal to use a programm bound by a GPL license and sell it. Even offering the same programm hosted on your site for money is allowed.
So there's no problem usin it commercially.

Why not launching it at the regular app store?
You could easily negotiate at least with MSXDEV developers to include their games....

However, you still have to make sure the source of your modifications needs to be available as well, and people are allowed to redistribute it for free.

Only if you distribute it with just C-Bios I guess.. Afaik Apple will probably reject emulators if they rely on still copyrighted BIOS Roms..

True. And it's up to Rakashazi how he will distribute it.

The iCP team are constructing some sort of a software gamechanger at the moment, that will allow you to use the iCP on a non-jailbroken iPhone. The keyboard function is somethin that DOES work on a non-jailbroken iPhone. And because BT is a standard Apple can't get a patent on, they will get it to work.

I don't know if Apple will reject each emulator. I thought most of the MSX games had at least the status abandoneware, or am I wrong? And what's Apple's policy on emulators?

Apple already allowed quite a few emulators. Most famous the C64 emulator.
So, I would at least try to get on the real Appstore. I don't see any technical reason why it wouldn't be accepted. Licensing may be an issue, but that's something only Apple can tell you. And since the C64 emu also isn't an official one, you may just slip through :-)

I for one am not interested in jailbreaking my iPhone, so hope to see a good emu for iOS in the appstore sooner than later.

Definitely worth a try. I'll let Rakashazi know : )

Great news, but I'm also concerned about the licensing issues. As FiXato pointed out, the modifications on blueMSX also need to be released and the system ROMs of real MSX machines may not be copied/distributed without permission/license of the owner.

Also, as an openMSX developer, I am of course a bit disappointed that openMSX wasn't chosen (which already has a lot of stuff to display on-screen stuff like shown in the movie), but OK, I can't help that Tongue

[…]the system ROMs of real MSX machines may not be copied/distributed without permission/license of the owner.
well.. in all fairness, BlueMSX itself doesn't stick to that rule either..
