MSX.emu, the blueMSX based MSX emulator for Android was recently updated to version 1.4.32. Since we last reported about this emulator, no MSX specific updates were made, but there were some generic Android fixes and optimizations. The most notable changes are:

  • Fixed a bug when using auto-frameskip that could cause a game to pause itself until toggling the menu
  • Fixed visual glitch in boolean menu options causing on/off text to appear instead of the real values
  • Added sound buffer size option to control worst case audio latency
  • Prompt user to enable Bluetooth automatically
  • Reduced chance of crashing on some devices when toggling the status bar
  • Fixed fast CPU->GPU copy (SurfaceTexture) in Android 4.1
  • Re-wrote OpenSL ES sound under-run detection to avoid incorrectly restarting playback until all sound data is exhausted
  • Add x86 build for devices with Intel CPUs

A full changelog is available here. MSX.emu is available on Google Play for €6,19.

€6.19 is pretty steep for something they just stole from a free opensource project.

Well, although I personally wouldn't buy this emulator either, there's nothing that stands in the way of a free blueMSX/openMSX-based emulator for Android. Apparently this emulator fills a gap in the market, and apparently no other developers feel inclined to provide a free alternative.

if "they" use the license legimately it's not stealing.

openMSX is indeed not available for iOS/Android/WebOS and fMSX does not have the same extended features as MSX.emu. Besides, the blueMSX team disagrees with Vampier's opinion about the 'ethical' dimensions of the licence. To be very clear : Vampier is not part of the blueMSX team.

Mars2000you I think most people know that I'm not part of the blueMSX team. Having that said (like I said before) I will voice my opinion however I want and when I want.

snout give it time; we don't have Ton's of money/time to port to every electronic gadget with an LCD screen Wink I tried to get openMSX to run on my microwave but I failed (not enough memory Tongue)

Hm.. then Konami would have to create a variation of Hyper Olympics, where the microwave performs depending on how fast you wiggle a joystick. Hannibal

Nice thing of GPL is that you can just get the sources of MSX.emu and make a free version...

Samor I would like to see the same Smile but buying dingoos/pandoras/new dev hardware(laptops/pcs/macs) is a lot of money to spend for something we give out for free (I'm not complaining because I love this hobby.) I recently did a rough estimate and I think in the last 9 years I spend about $3000 on openMSX (hosting/new computer/electricity/hardware) and then I'm not even looking at the time I put into it (scripting/testing.. I don't do C++)

It's a fun hobby being on an emu dev team Smile

I just want to say that the author of MSX.emu is feeding back several improvements to the blueMSX code base (he does have write access to the blueMSX SVN repository) and is a very honest GPL developer.

MSX.emu is furthermore sharing the UI with other emus so improvements in the framework benefits all emulators (I guess fMSX has that benefit too to some extent). Whether he choose to charge money for the work is really his decision, but it is a fair bit of time invested in the port so its not even close to stealing code and make profit of someone else work.
