I've just noticed that there is a resistor on one of the chips (c13) shorting pin 1 - 8

This isn't shown on the picture posted on this thread. I'm guessing this is the mod you are referring to.

I'll remove it and try again...

hold on, pin 1 has been removed and a yellow wire is attached to pin 8 via the resistor. Can anyone advise what I need to do? I don't see the resistor in any pics of this board? Question

At second inspection, it may not have been removed entirely. Looks like it's been cut so that it doesn't make connection with the board. A yellow sire has been attached, and pins 1 - 8 shorted by a resistor.

No, it shouldn't reset your machine when using CALL AUDIO or CALL MUSIC. (*1)

It's a good idea to contact SuperSoniqs and ask them for a recipe on how to to remove the mods and configure the upgrade board to the standard configuration.

*1: If your machine has an internal MSX-Music, the first CALL AUDIO or CALL MUSIC command issued will activate the given extension:

1) If you issue an CALL AUDIO first, the MSX-Audio extensions will be activated and the MSX-Audio BIOS will begin to accept both CALL AUDIO and CALL MUSIC commands. All MML will be handled by the MSX-Audio BIOS. To be able to use the MSX-Music BIOS again you must reset the machine.

2) If you issue an CALL MUSIC first, the MSX-Music extensions will be activated and the MSX-Music BIOS will begin to accept only the CALL MUSIC command. CALL AUDIO should not be used or the machine will freeze. All MML will be handled by the MSX-Music BIOS. To be able to use the MSX-Audio BIOS again you must reset the machine

But the Sony HB-F1XD you own don't have an internal MSX-Music, so you don't need to worry about any of that. All CALL AUDIO or CALL MUSIC commands will be handled by the MSX-Audio BIOS on your machine.

Hi.

I think the goal is to redirect the bios to the melodies to OPL3 or Moonsound.
You have a Moonsound or OPL3 done by yourself?

That's a common misunderstanding. But the MSX-Audio BIOS v1.3 is able to do the redirection for all OPLn chips: OPL1 (aka MSX-Audio), OPL2, OPL3 and OPL4 (aka Moonsound).

The advantage that is exclusive for OPL3 and OPL4 chips is that the sound will be played on stereo.

OTOH, the OPL1 has a minor restriction that it don't has the wave-selection register that the newer versions of the chip have. As a result, around 10% of the instruments will sound a bit different. Nothing serious, but there will be a subtle difference. The OPL3 and OPL4 chips don't have this restriction and are able to produce any sound that the OPLL is capable of, and much more.

Sd_snatcher : what about the 3 MSX-AUDIO cartridges (Family Stadium, Labyrinth, Xevious - Fardraut Saga) ?

With real (or emulated) Panasonic MSX-AUDIO in slot 1 and the game rom in slot 2, you get MSX-AUDIO music, but following my tests on openMSX, it does not seem to work with MSX-AUDIO 1.3. Do you have tried on a real machine ?

Which openMSX version are you using? v0.8.2 had a bug that caused the OPL chip not to be detected.

Please continue this conversation on the following thread:

Tests were made with version 0.8.2 (for a guy who wanted to have a super-boosted config). I don't have yet checked what happens in version 0.9.0.
