Crowdfunding on MSX is an entertaining thought, but simply doesn't seem viable for someone to 'pay the bills' off. Got to stay realistic about it.

is the common case, people simply not managing their afairs well enough. Not cutting expenses when income goes south, spending money on things they don't need, ignoring bills so that extra costs get added all the time, etc, etc.

Social security. Really, if the guy cares enough about himself, he can fix it and will be fine in a few months.

Crowndfunding would be viable if the game is released simultaneously to a retro platform and to a modern platform like, let's say: Windows 8 (iOS is too much "crowded" (pardon the pun) already).
Personally I would love to have some MSXDEV entries ported to my mobile and, for sure, I would buy some of them in carts, even if some of my favorite game conversions are not allowed by the supreme MSX court to have cart versions.

Maybe I can help by giving out some numbers:
I was also interested about how many people are actually willing to pay any money for MSX software today. When I made rMSX (that is still the most advanced MSX software I've ever made) I decided to try this out...

To try this out I set the price very low (5€) so that the price it self would not be the reason for anyone to skip the opportunity to buy it and I released it as shareware. The shareware version was crippled with annoying boot logo each time you start it.

Now 3 years later I've sold exactly 11 copies... I don't doubt that an MSX1 game with great gameplay, no shareware alternative and no high requirements wouldn't sell better, but... I still think that you can make much better income by gathering bottles in a park than by programming MSX-software...

Sorry... real life is not fun...

There is only one thing which needs funding in modern day MSX game projects and that is producing new cartridges and their boxes and manuals. I can understand if MSX cartridge maker asks money in advance, just to make sure he can make batch of new boxed cartridges in short time. In theory, crowdfunding MSX game project sounds interesting, but I don´t know... Personally I would like to fund some cartridge maker when I hear of some surely coming new MSX game which gets finished "soon", so cartridge maker will have enough money for new batch and then it´s just a matter of time to get new game, not a matter of money.

@MaSaXi: Why? I think that every mind fart is already released on cartridge already. There is no problem in finding a partner to release your game on cartridge.

I even think that there are TOO many physical releases already.

Muffie's conversions are not yet available on carts. I would buy them for sure...

[FREE - HOW TO MAKE EASY & FUN MONEY ADVICE]
NYYRIKKI, try the following:
* Create a simple, but fun do play, game. Even something like your 8-line Rally game.
* Launch it simultaneously for: iOS, Windows 8 (phone/windows), Android, MSX and Spectrum. (0.99 on mobile platforms, free ROM/DSK for retro platforms with a collectors cartridge/disk/tape version) - All versions with the same graphics.
* Send e-mails and post on forums about this nice interaction of modern V.S. old. (ex: Touch Arcade, which is owned by some former C64/Amiga fans)

=> I BET, you'll make a lot more money... C'mon, how long it would take you to port that to all those platforms?
Oh yeah... About this:

Who cares? You should know by now that users don't care about what's inside.

Ok, maybe that was a bad point... It is anyway pretty useful tool too... at least if you have HDD... BTW I like very much technical details and I know few other like me too... How ever yes, most likely many people don't think like that. (yet again going offtopic, never mind)

Games work better, yes I'm sure and maybe my test was not very good, but the actual point was anyway that I don't believe in "easy money with MSX software"-idea and therefore I would not put anyones hopes too high... Feel free to prove me wrong. I would be happy to be wrong.

If anyone has better examples, it would be nice to hear. I don't believe that this kind of information can be really considered business secret in MSX world. Smile

I like technical details too! But we're not mainstream! The 11 sales you got were from people like us.
And I agree with your "easy money with MSX (only) SW" point.

Seriously, try something on mobile platforms just for fun...

I guess it could work if you put other platforms in the mix as well... pure MSX software? that will hardly sell now, even if it's the best MSX game ever made.

btw, NYYRIKKI, I somehow completely missed rMSX' existence even (oops)... but I only use emulators, so I guess it's not useful for me, other than bragging about running emulators in emulators.

Also, your target audience included Turbo-R owners only. I never even had one... I think 11 copies is rather amazing in that respect. The Turbo-R is rather common in the Dutch MSX community that's still active, but outside of that...
