also, if I wanted to use it as a fpga development board and wipe the original binary file, is the original file available if I want to put it back to as it was?

It is a very good question. The small series production could be started right now if I would find around 30-40 users which would like to use Procyon as the development system. The card electronics was fully tested end of April 2014.

However, currently I'm into the development of the FPGA, which takes all the spare time. I don't see how the people would be wishful to have it before completing the first generation of 9938/9958 + SCC + PSG + RAM functionality.

Back to your question, the config binary is available any time. You can use any 3-rd party SPI FLASH programmer to configure the card (No need in Xilinx toolchain/config HW).

I noticed it will also support MIDI… In case you’re not aware, note that the MIDI IN port needs an opto-isolator to prevent ground loops.

A-ha, you've zoomed the photos ;)

Sorry, about MIDI I wasn't elaborate enough. This is kinda MIDI over PS/2, which is regarding the physical layer exactly like the PC GAME PORT MIDI connection. I.e. +5, GND, CMOS MIDI OUT and CMOS MIDI IN (instead of PS2_CLK and PS2_DATA). The rest of electronics is in the standard MIDI-PC cable, including the optocoupler and the output transistors.

If the PS/2 to 15 pin cable looks too bulky, one could built the custom cable with a single optocoupler and a bunch of resistors (no need in transistors, board sources enough current). There are 2 PS/2 ports on the card, so 2 MIDI networks can be addressed independently ;)

Has anyone counted how many people showed intetest so far in previous pages?
I guess there were a lot less than 30-40.
So, for something like 20 units, is it just going to raise the price, or is that just too few to manufacture? How much is it anyway?
I think there will be more intetest once there are some complete projects for it like, scc, megarom loader, various sound cards, various vdp, nes and other consoles in a cartridge sort of thing etc (not all at once).

Hello, i am impressed with your work and very interested in Procyon. Count with me to order one of them! Big smile

Dear MSX fans, gurus and professionals,

I need some help to test out my home brewed SCC core and the digital audio mixer to mix out the SSG+SCC inside the Procyon FPGA. My SSG core is working just fine.
Do you know any software/demo/player, which could meet the following system requirements:
1. SCC slot is expanded. The SCC sits in the subslot #0.
2. The main system memory (4Mbytes memory mapped) sits in the same SCC slot, but subslot #3.
3. Currently I do all the debug on the MSX-1+ machine (CX-5MII/128). Procyon VDP reincarnation fully supports TEXT2 mode (80 characters), but lacking higher modes and the command engine of V9938 for the moment. It would be awesome if the player will be MSX1 TEXT MODE 2/MSX-DOS 1.0 compatible.

In the worst case, I could implement the ESE-SCC hardware, but it looks like the original loader doesn't support the expanded slots with SCC+main memory in it (does it?).

It would be a great trying out the real music.

Thank you,

Synthesix works in 80 columns mode on MSX1 with V9938. SCC only though, no PSG support yet.

@Grauw,

Excellent. So I'll use it straight away. Do I need to emulate Synthesix ROM or I can find somewhere the disk version?
If no disk version available, then I can load the ROM image into the main CX5MII memory in 3.2
The main machine memory is pretty much defunct, since the system is using the full blown memory in 1.3. Do you use the MSX mapper?

Thank you,

All the Best,

Maxim

There’s no disk version yet, it needs a 64K Konami mapper.

Oh, it seems that SCC mapper and cartridge memory emulation must be implemented first. BTW, which loader is compatible with my config?
I plan using ROMLOAD tool.
