Since there have been recent attempts to re-produce the Video9000 cartridge, I would like to briefly revive this thread.

  • Is there interest in a (new)Video 9000 card?
  • How many would buy it?
  • Would anyone develop software for it?
  • Which software would be interesting?
  • Who still owns an original?

Let me know your thoughts on this, maybe it is worth spreading the word?

I am personally very interested in a V9990 with superimposing capabilities (no need for digitising). Calamar said they want to realise this after they complete the Krakengraph Lite, so I am eagerly awaiting developments on that full version Smile. I hope they will complete it.

Yes, i like the idea too. For me the same, i like the superimposing, like how it is used in OpenMSX, so you don't have to select a source when switching.

As long as it would accept 15Khz RGB being fed in, it would be really cool to have one, now, about usage, being realistic, V9990 has not caught on and lets be honest, nowadays incentives for development are geared towards MSX1, so we have on one hand Kai Magazine and few others that every now and then release something for V9990, and we have a bunch of people that are getting into development that have no reason to think much about MSX2 or 2+, v9990 is an even thougher proposition to sell to a developer...

So, even though there is a market for V9990, unfortunately the (I hate using this kind of jargon, but hey, can't think of anything better) mindset of MSX development is mostly MSX1, ocasionally a MSX2 game with ocasionally a 2+ smother scroll, and in a rare event a V9990 game.... Do not see this changing, at least not in the near future....

Agree with @ducasp - I even think that might be nicer to have a cartridge with second V9938 or V9958 with superimpose, this way people can make patches to existing games to: 1) bring up some advanced graphics to old titles 2) play the MSX2/+ games which are missing only VDP of MSX2/+ (and run without need for other things like memory mapper, OPLL, F4 register etc). Might become more popular device (and i guess cheaper, but here i'm not completely sure). I would like if it can accept both CVBS and RGB signals for superimposing, of course

Yep would be interested in full super impose etc.

Maybe things like intruder or other game solutions could be made but not on a second screen, but overlays on screen of a game. For instance, map overlay, status overlay, screen one adding things to screen two, etc. I also saw somene make a galaga game with something like a movie/ gfx back ground or something. So maybe some existing software could be updated to use something akin to this.

Pensioner's idea also sounds like a nice idea about bringing more power to regular msx1 (or others) by combining stuff in one cart and instantly turn it into more. That could become a popular device (and in one go make it possible to use higher specs.

@Pencioner Another possible use for such a V9958 cartridge would be for it to switch to an MA20-like mode when inserted into an MSX1. I also agree with @ducasp that even though the V9990 is great, there's just very little software out there that makes use of it. Developers normally try to target the lower spec platforms to ensure that the highest number of people will be able to play their games.
