The MSX system was not intended to be just an "affordable home computer" (as someone stated before), but an elegant and smart system.
...
Do all of you still love your MSX?
What I wrote was "The idea of MSX always was to design the best possible affordable home computer, that comply the standard." Not just an affordable home computer.
Of course ZX Spectrum was (and many others were) an affordable home computer, but not the best possible one and not really complied any standard.
And I still love my MSX. And I love my Spectrum too!
I also must apologize to @megatron, because those weren't his words, he simply copied @lezanderson's answer to another thread. I am very sorry for snapping like that.
I've suspected for a while, they are probably the same person.
isn 't that called sockpuppeting?
yip
I support the idea. Raspberry PI has all the power required to the job, and more. The only things missing are cartridge slots, joy ports and such. And an attractive casing. It can be build!
That's a stupid idea. There's nothing in the Raspberry Pi that resembles an MSX. If you need an emulation layer to run the MSX software then you already have that in any PC. Basing a new MSX design on a Raspberry Pi would be like buying a Porsche Cayman and modding it so it will run and drive like a Fiat 500:
And analog video out! Composite would be good. I'm not joking! I even kept my old 14" CRT colour TV for using with my retro computers!
Sure! That will appeal to the 10-20 of us who still keep CRT displays. Who cares about attracting thousands of new users who just want to connect these toys to their existing hardware.
While use of FPGA is not perse emulation, what is your opinion on the use of FPGA based HW such as the megaflashroms SCC "chip"?

First of all, I know next to nothing about electronics and integrated circuits, so please take my opinion about this with a grain of salt.
My opinion on using FPGA components hasn't changed since the long post I wrote over 10 years ago on this thread (scroll down to the post on 16-04-2005 at 22:01).
In short, my opinion is two-fold: on the one hand, I prefer discreet components because they're closer to the original and easier to tinker with. On the other hand, FPGA chips open new possibilities at the expense of blurring the line between hardware and software.

Except that RasPI is much cheaper hardware than almost any MSX today.
I'm not saying there even should be any new MSX design, but if there will, that RasPI is as good a base for it like any.

Where are those thousands of new users? The MSX is a retro thing and nostalgia. If you want something new and shiny, you don't want MSX.

Irrelevant. Cost is not a factor when determining whether two platforms are close related or not. If we were to follow that rule, the IchigoJam would be an even better platform, right?

Then you have no idea of what you're talking about.

Here.
Try to keep the discussion somewhat civil, please.
