Welcome to the forums MonsterSky. It wasn't all that long ago that I was a newbie to the MSX world as well, especially regarding MSX hardware. Now I'm just a Novice who owns actual hardware. : ) Everyone else here is a Master of MSX, so feel free to ask any specific questions, especially if you are looking to purchase hardware.
You would first want go get a good understanding of the different stages of MSX's life: MSX > MSX2 > MSX2+ > MSX Turbo R and which games / software you would want to play most. I think generally speaking an MSX2+ is the way to go if you want a full range of software, but if you want to play anything and everything (except tape games directly that is) then getting a Turbo R might be more your style.
If you do end up getting MSX hardware, you should consider getting a nice Flash cart which can double-back as a harddrive.

The advice abiut the Flash cart is nice, i was looking at www.msxcartridgeshop.com but i don't know if there are better sites/products to lookfor...
