Oh yeah! I completely forgot, I did finish it a bit ago lol.

I hope you don't mind, but I just cannot resist to include this gem in my next MSX Pixel Art collection. :)

I'm indecisive on how I feel about this background for this piece, could I get some feedback or suggestions?

I really like your art, and this seems like another masterpiece... but if you look for some criticism then yes... I can see why you have problem with the background.

It seems the background comes a bit too much front and tends to "hide" the darker genie art... Maybe the green color is not the best? Maybe the dark genie should have lighter background (maybe sun fall, tent wall or something) to display the hair better and make the character to stand out?

Lovely artwork once again Smile.

I think the columns, the green beams and the smoke add visual noise, which is distracting from both characters which should be the center of attention.

Maybe replace the columns with a simpler middle-eastern tiled pattern with a low-intensity colour and a lot of black (just speckles hinting at a shape?), which doesn’t draw attention due to its repetitiveness but still hints at a middle-eastern ruins theme?

And as for the green beams, maybe remove the smoke, or dither ’em? I think if the columns are changed to something low-key and the smoke is gone, the beams are more identifiable as a separate item and no longer distract from the rest of the picture (so you can keep ’em and the lighting as they are).

Before reading every post in this quite big topic now, can this art be used for non commercial software? i.e. as background in a music player, which will be downloadable free of charge?
It would take away a lot of "lack of gfx barriers". Smile

If you would want to use a specific piece you always need to contact the author for permission unless it is explicitly noted by the author that it’s released under a free license (like a Creative Commons one).

The purpose of this topic is to discuss the creation of pixel art, share techniques, tips & tricks, showcase and ask for feedback.

Thanks all for the compliments and criticisms! I'll definitely try to cut back on the smoke and use a more low key color for objects in the background, I'm just wondering though, since the palette is so small which color would be best to use lol. Also, I'll be sure to give the Arabian style pattern a try, that's a really good idea Smile

You’re welcome, I tried to be helpful Smile. A low key colour would be dark red maybe? Or maybe dark green’s good as well, using it sparingly just to hint at the specular lighting outline of a stone pattern? Btw when I thought about patterns I had King’s Valley II, Usas and Space Manbow in the back of my mind as examples of the concept. But I think it’s cool how the bottle illuminates, so definitely’d be nice to use some lighting on the background as well.

I apologize for the double post, but I would like to get some feedback on this change before I go any further and add the patterns.

I tried blue for a less garish background color, it shouldn't pop out as much. I'm specifically asking about the pillar and the blocks above it. How do they look? Are they subtle enough, or do they need less shading and more black? Thanks.

Sorry I hadn't seen this reply before I started working lol, but I can try the dark red if the blue I used doesn't work particularly good.
