Well, the best option is DSK-PRO 11.6 on a real MSX computer.
Why don't you try that?

I think using DSK-PRO is a bit overpowered in this case, since it is really unlikely the disks are copy protected. Most probably they are in a standard format, but the problem of not being able to read them on a PC is caused by something else.

DSK-PRO certainly has it's use cases, tough.

You know, we've been operating all this time under the assumption that the disk should be readable, but has it been tested on actual MSX hardware yet? It's entirely possible the disk platter inside is dirty/moldy, thus preventing the disk from being read -- I can't tell you how many disks I've bought off of eBay that have met this fate and needed to be cleaned before I could actually use them.

If you push the metal shutter aside and angle the disk up toward a light source, you can spin the circle on the backside of the diskette very slowly and check both sides of the platter for any spots. If you see spots on the platter -- particularly if they're white or otherwise contrast sharply with the black of the diskette platter -- then that is 100% the cause of the problem, and you'll likely never be able to read the disk unless and until the platter is cleaned.

Cleaning mold spots off of a disk is a tricky and risky process, but with enough time and patience, it can be done, and most any disk is salvageable.

If you can't read any 360KB / 720KB disks at all I think you have to blame the drive... Is it a drive that you connect trough USB-cable? It is well known that not all USB-drives can read DD-disks anymore. Try if you can find some other USB floppy drive to try.

The drive is IDE Floppy disk on approximately 2004 pentium 4 PC (Win 7), the drive reads 1.44MB disks as write to them, so it works. Also, I have no MSX, the only MSX I have is from a friend and is defected as I wrote in other topic here, it doesn't work and have no floppy drive (I regret selling my AX-170 MSX with it's disk drive in 2002)

@Shinobi: do you have a mass storage device connected to your MSX? Like a harddrive, CF/SD card on a MFR or Carnivore2 or something similar. If so you could just use fdsave command to save the disk content to a .dsk file.

You can download fdload (to write a .dsk file to disk) and fdsave here.

Actually, I don't have an MSX, the only one is from a friend and is defected and have no drive. I just want to preserve the disks of the books I scanned, here's my blog of MSX books and other stuff

Well, but DSK-PRO is not just for protected disks.
Actually DSK-PRO was created to copy unprotected disks, because a .DSK image is for unprotected disks.

Later, I add the option to copy protected disks with .PDI image.

And, in a real MSX you can do it very fast and with more chances to create a good .DSK image because it is done with direct access to chip controller.

Shinobi: it could very well be a set of 360kB (single sided, double density, 3.5") disks. My PC still has a native floppy disk drive (connector on the mobo) and on that PC I can easily dump these with Linux.

Sorry, my bad, my floppy is connected through floppy disk drive connector on the motherboard (not IDE as I said) ..

It's more than 10 years old PC, it's from 2004 and the disks couldn't be dumped using disk manager under Win 7.

Then try with Linux. I'm sure it will work.

As I wrote in the FAQ:

Quote:

type: cat example.dsk > /dev/fd0, if your disk-drive has the device-name fd0. That's it! To make a disk image of your real disk, use the same procedure, but then the other way round: cat /dev/fd0 > example.dsk . (This is why I love Unix!)

For single sided disks, you may have to create a special device node first (you can do that in your home directory, e.g.): mknod ~/fd0u360 b 2 12 and then transfer the disk like this: cat example.dsk > ~/fd0u360.

Ok, I'll prepare a Linux machine with FDD and I'll try as you said. Thanks Manuel.
